Postpronotal lobes brown with one distinct, not very strong basal bristle. Scutum black, somewhat shining to strongly dusted greyish in prescutellar depression. Acrostichals and dorsocentrals apparently uniserial, ®ne, very short, latter with one strong, long prescutellar bristle. One distinct, not very strong postsutural supraalar, one ®ner, shorter presutural. One strong, long notopleural. One strong, long postalar. Scutellum with two strong, long apical bristles, two ®ne, shorter subapicals. Laterotergite with fan of bristles. Anterior and posterior spiracles blackish.
Legs brownish. Fore femur with one row of ®ne, not very long ventral bristles. Fore tibia with one row of strong, long bristles especially on apical half. First tarsomere of fore tarsus with distinct short bristles especially dorsally. Mid femur with one row of strong, long posteroventrals, a few distinct anteroventrals at basal tip. Mid tibia with rather strong, not very long ventrals. First tarsomere of mid tarsus with distinct dorsals and ventrals. Hind femur with ®ne, rather long ventrals. Hind tibia with numerous strong, rather long dorsals. First tarsomere of hind tarsus with numerous distinct dorsals and ventrals.
Wing clear. Sc abbreviated. R 41 5 branched at right-angle. Discal cell strongly truncate. M1, M2 abbreviated. A1 complete. Anal lobe well developed, anal angle acute. Halter with yellow base and stem, black knob.
Abdomen (®gures 39, 40) with ®rst three segments yellowish with distinct lateral bristles, otherwise brown. Sternite 6 unmodi®ed. Sternite 7 distinct but membranous (®gure 39). Sternite 8 somewhat elongated posteriorly, with a ventroanterior process on each side (®gures 39, 40). Width of tergite 8 reduced laterally (®gure 40).
Hypopygium (®gure 41) with cercus made up of ventroinner bare lobe, visible in dorsal view, and well-bristled external lobe. Epandrial lamellae connected anteriorly, with rather broad rounded anterior tip and narrower rounded wellbristled posterior tip. Hypandrium well sclerotized, with characteristic shape in lateral view. Phallus rather short, thick, not pointed at tip.
Female unknown.
Discussion
E. samaruensis belongs to the E. (C.) chrysocera -complex. It may be distinguished from all other species of this complex by its unmodi®ed male sternite 6.
Distribution West Africa: Nigeria.
Etymology The name of the species is derived from the type-locality.
Empis (Coptophlebia) singulare sp. n. (®gures 42±46)
Type material
HOLOTYPE:, Nigeria, Samaru , mercury vapour light trap, 28 August 1970, P. H. Ward ( NHM) ; PARATYPE: 1, same data but`2± 8.ix.1970 ’ ( MNHN) .
Description
Male: length of wing 4.9 mm.
Head with occiput black. Ocellar triangle prominent with pair of short bristles. Frons blackish. Face blackish, shining in lower part. Antenna blackish, pedicel a little lighter. Proboscis not very long (1.5 times the head height), labrum brown, labium blackish, slender, strongly sclerotized, with distinct annulations, palpus brown, reduced. Eyes narrowly separated on frons, ommatidia smaller at middle.
Thorax dark brown, postpronotal lobe, postalar callus lighter. Antepronotum with distinct lateral bristles. Proepisternum bare. Prosternum with a few short lateral bristles. Postpronotal lobes with one distinct, not very strong basal bristle. One strong, long postsutural supraalar, one ®ne, shorter presutural. Two strong, long notopleurals. One strong, long postalar. Acrostichals and dorsocentrals irregularly biserial, ®ne, short, with one strong, long prescutellar bristle. Scutellum with two strong, long apical bristles, two ®ner, shorter subapicals. Laterotergite with fan of strong bristles. Anterior and posterior spiracles blackish.
Legs dark brown. Fore femur with only short bristles. Fore tibia with a few distinct short ventrals at apical tip, a few short dorsals on apical half. First tarsomere of fore tarsus short pennate dorsally. Mid femur with numerous very short dorsal bristles, a few posteroventral pennate bristles at apical tip. Mid tibia short pennate dorsally on apical two-thirds, with distinct ventral bristles. Mid tarsus with only short bristles. Hind femur short pennate dorsally except at tips, with one row of distinct, not very long ventral bristles. Hind tibia long pennate dorsally, antero- and posteroventrally on apical half. Hind tarsus with distinct ventral and dorsal bristles.
Wing clear to brown at tip especially along R 21 3, R 4 and R 5. R 41 5 branched at right-angle. Discal cell strongly truncate. M1, M2 abbreviated. A1 complete, feebly sclerotized. Anal lobe well developed, anal angle acute. Halter with yellow base and black stem and knob.
Abdomen (®gures 42±44) brown, lighter base with a few distinct bristles. Sternite 6 (®gure 44) thickened on its posterior margin, somewhat voluminous in lateral view. Tergite 7 somewhat membranous anteriorly. Sternite 7 fragmented in several membranous parts (®gure 42). Width of tergite 8 reduced laterally (®gure 43). Sternite 8 lengthened posteriorly, with a ventroanterior process on each side (®gures 42, 43).
Hypopygium (®gures 45, 46) with cercus very characteristic, made up of inner bare lobe and external well bristled lobe itself divided into anterior and posterior parts (®gure 46). Epandrial lamellae connected anteriorly with rounded strongly bristled tip. Phallus short, thick, not pointed at tip.
Female unknown.
Discussion
E. singulare belongs to the E. (C.) chrysocera -complex. In general aspect, this species is very diOEerent from all others of this complex with darker wing at tip, two strong notopleurals, the presence of pennate bristles on mid and hind male femora and narrowly dichoptic eyes with ommatidia smaller at middle.
Distribution West Africa: Nigeria.
Etymology
From the Latin word singularis meaning particular, distinct, in reference to several characters diOEerent of those usually found in the E. (C.) chrysocera -complex.
