Diagnosis. Ecnomina sheldoni closely resembles other species in the group from which it is distinguished by the superior appendages which are dorso-ventrally flattened distally and the relatively long, tapered processes on tergum X.

Description. Head, body and wings brown, abdomen paler ventrally; wings similar to E. merki ( Fig. 172 View FIGURES 168–174 ). Forewing length about 2.7–2.8 times width: male 2.8–3.2 mm, female 3.1–3.8 mm. Forewing fork 2 relatively long, sessile, length about 1.2–1.5 times length of fork 3; fork 3 relatively long, with short footstalk, length fork about 2.9–4.5 times length footstalk, footstalk length about 1.1–1.7 times length cross-vein m, r-m and m nearly contiguous at footstalk fork 3, r-m and m separated by about 0–0.5 times length of cross-vein m; fork 4 slightly shorter than fork 3; fork 5 long, length about twice length of fork 4. Hindwing length about 3.1 times width, fork 2 sessile, length about 1.4–1.6 times length of fork 3.

Male Tergum X membranous, with one pair of relatively long, robust dorsal processes, relatively widely separated, slightly tapered distally ( Fig. 170 View FIGURES 168–174 ). Superior appendages slightly dorso-ventrally flattened in distal half; in lateral view, relatively slender, length about 5 times width, tapered in distal half ( Fig. 168 View FIGURES 168–174 ); in dorsal view, length about 4.5 times width, with one pair of long mesal spines and several pairs of shorter spines distally ( Fig. 170 View FIGURES 168–174 ). Phallus simple, tube-like ( Fig. 168 View FIGURES 168–174 ). Inferior appendages short; in ventral view, fused in basal half, dilated and truncated distally, with oval excision meso-distally, length about 0.4 times width ( Fig. 169 View FIGURES 168–174 ); in lateral view, slender, length about 4 times width ( Fig. 168 View FIGURES 168–174 ).

Female. Genitalia with a single slender, elongate mesal process on sternite VIII; segment IX relatively long, tapered slightly distally, segment X relatively short and segments IX and X relatively slender ( Fig. 195 View FIGURES 184–195 ).
