Diagnosis
Acanthoaxiidae with laterally branched colonies with the polyps arranged spirally around the branches. Polyps able to completely retract into dome-shaped coenenchymal mounds.
Type species
Acanthoaxis wirtzi sp. nov. by original designation.
Etymology
The generic name is derived from the Latin word acanthus, a thorny evergreen, and axis alluding to its spiny axis. Gender masculine.
