Coniceromyia affinis Borgmeier

Diagnosis (male). Hypopygium left epandrial process with large dorsal lobe directed medially and a ventral lobe; first flagellomere elongate-conical. Coniceromyia affinis is morphologically similar to C. neofusca sp. nov., sharing with this species a nearly identical wing venation, foreleg, hind femur and hypopygium. They can be differentiated by the shape of the first flagellomere, which is elongate-conical in C. affinis and globular in C. neofusca .

Redescription. Male. Body length, 1.4–2.0 mm. Head. Frons brown, sparsely setulose, with well-defined median furrow. Flagellomere 1 light brown, pubescent, elongate-conical. Arista apical, pubescent, about as long as flagellomere 1. Palpus yellowish-brown; two genal setae. Thorax. Scutum and pleural regions brown, anepisternum bare; scutellum brown. Legs yellowish-brown. Foretibia with two dorsal setae and anterodorsal row of strong setulae. Foremetatarsus with anteroapical setulose process and anterior excavation, without large setae ( Fig. 139). Hind femur not swollen (height/length ratio, 0.34), with posteroventral group of tiny blunt setulae with semicircular distribution, tapering toward ventral margin—dorsal setulae thicker ( Figs. 244–245). Hind tibia with one dorsal seta. Wing ( Fig. 191). Costa swollen, 0.38 of the wing length; M1 concave, curved posteriorly at apex; M2 slightly concave, antero-posterior distance between M2 and CuA1 at CuA1 apex about 1.2 times the distance between M1 and M2 at same level; CuA1 slightly sinuous. Halter yellow. Abdomen. Tergites dark brown, with lighter posterior band. Hypopygium yellowish-brown ( Figs. 1–4). Epandrium covered with microtrichia mostly dorsally; dorsal suture of epandrium absent, left suture present. Left epandrial process dorsally setulose on apical half, with one ventral and one dorsal medially-directed lobe. Two left subepandrial processes: one setulose curved distal process and one proximal setose elevation (black and white arrow on Figs. 2 and 4). Right epandrial projection with subepandrial group of setulae. Hypoproct with two setae. Hypandrium without projections.

Geographical distribution. Northeastern Argentina, southern states in Brazil, and areas of higher altitudes in southeastern Brazil.

Comments. The description of the hypopygium and the recognition of the foretibia anterodorsal row of strong setulae and the foremetatarsus anterior excavation are the most important additions to the original description of Coniceromyia affinis .
