robsoni View in CoL

Pila robsoni Prashad, 1925: 85 View in CoL , pl. 14, figs. 8, 9. Type material — holotype [by original designation]: NZSI 2414; paratypes: NZSI 21546/4 (3 spms.). Type locality —“Near Balapiti, Ceylon ”. Distribution — Sri Lanka.

Remarks. Prashad (1925: 86) gave a table of measurements of 4 specimens (all referred to NZSI 2414), indicating that the holotype (“ Type ”) was by far the largest. The 3 specimens in NZSI 21546/4 are from the same locality as the holotype and have been considered as paratypes in the NZSI. It seems likely that the holotype was removed from the original type series and retained the original catalogue number, with the remaining 3 specimens given the new number NZSI 21546/4.

rotundata

Ampullaria rotundata Say, 1829: 245 . Type material —location unknown [“not found” in ANSP ( Baker 1964: 168)]. Type locality —“St. John’s River in Florida”.

Remarks. G.B. Sowerby III (1909: 357) considered it “most likely a form of Hopetonensis ” [= paludosa Say, 1829], a North American species ( Cowie & Thiengo 2003: 66), but it was subsequently synonymized with globosa Swainson by Pilsbry (1927b: 64; see also Walker 1918: 124; Pilsbry 1953: 60; Clench 1955: 107; Clench & Turner 1956: 120). Spelled by Binney (1858: 147) as “ Ampluria rotundata ”.

ruchetiana

Ampullaria ruchetiana Billotte, 1885: 105 View in CoL , pl. 6, fig. 1. Type material —location unknown. Type locality —“Rivière de l’Ouébi, au-dessus du Guélidi, Çomalis” [Shebelle River, above Guélidi, Somalia].

Remarks. Noted as from Somalia by Paetel (1887: 481), referencing the listing of the species by Mayer (1886 [as “1885”]: 78). Variety of speciosa Philippi , teste Alderson (1925: 99). Valid species, teste Germain (1907a: 232, 1907b: 116, 1907d: 529; as “ Rucheti ”), Kobelt (1912b: 60), Pilsbry & Bequaert (1927: 176) and Prashad (1931: 168). Synonym of speciosa Philippi , teste Pain (1961: 20), followed here.

rugosa

Ampullaria rugosa Philippi (1851: 20) View in CoL . Unavailable name: first published as a junior synonym of wernei Philippi View in CoL ; not treated as an available name or adopted as the name of a taxon before 1961 (Code, Art. 11.6).

Remarks. Name attributed to “Parreyss in lit.” by Philippi. Cowie & Thiengo (2003: 74) followed Swainson (1822b: un-numbered text page, pl. 120) and others in treating rugosa G.B. Sowerby I (1822: un-numbered text page, pl. [184], figs. 1–2), clearly a species of Pila , as a misidentification of rugosa Lamarck , a New World species.
