Lanistes ellipticus Martens, 1866: 294 View in CoL , pl. 70, figs. 9, 10. Type material — lectotype ( Köhler & Glaubrecht 2006: 204): ZMB 8568a; paralectotype: ZMB 8568b. Type locality —“ Mozambique, Zambezi River at Tete” ( Köhler & Glaubrecht 2006: 204). Distribution —Chari and Congo basins ( Germain 1907b: 116), Lake Tanganyika ( Germain 1908: 727), Mozambique [“Lorenzo Marques” ( Connolly 1912: 257)], “ Rhodesia. Mouth of Tschobe [= Chobe] River” ( Connolly 1912: 257), Zimbabwe ( Connolly 1939: 556), northern Mozambique, southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lake Malawi ( Brown 1980: 54, 1994: 63–64; Berthold 1990: 48).
Remarks. Connolly (1939: 556), in stating “ Type in Berlin museum”, did not explicitly select that specimen as the name-bearing type; this statement therefore did not constitute a valid lectotype designation (Code, Art. 74.5). Synonym of ovum Troschel , teste G.B. Sowerby III (1916: 67). Valid species, teste Kobelt (1911: 8), Pilsbry & Bequaert (1927: 198), Brown (1980: 54, 1994: 63) and Berthold (1991: 246), followed here, who all placed it in Lanistes subg. Meladomus .
