Etymology: undulatus = Latin for wavy.
Lestes undulatus Say, 1839: 35 View in CoL (description of male); Selys 1862: 311 (description of male and female, distribution); Kirby 1890: 161 View Cited Treatment (data on species description and distribution); Calvert 1909: 104 (key, illustration of thorax in ventral view, appendages in lateral and dorsal views); Kennedy 1942: 283 (illustration of appendages in lateral and dorsal views); Davies & Tobin 1984: 34 (data on publication and distribution); Muzón 1997: 7 (larvae); Lencioni 2005: 101, Fig. 60(A–C) (data on description, type locality, deposition, distribution, and larval description, illustration of appendages in lateral and dorsal views from Kennedy 1942, thorax in ventral view from Calvert 1909); Costa et al. 2006: 60–61, Fig. 25 View FIGURE 25 (appendages lateral view, key for adult males); Garrison et al. 2010: 117 (data on species).
Types. Unknown.
Larva described. Yes ( Muzón 1997).
Additional material examined. (2 ♂♂ + 2 ♀♀): 2 ♂♂ + 2 ♀♀ Argentina: Buenos Aires, Los Torinas, charco s/ Rt 11, 18.i.1995, J. Muzón leg.
Distribution. Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul), Uruguay, Argentina, Chile.
Diagnostic characters. ♂ —Cercus in lateral view: basal 1/2 straight, slightly inclined upward, apical 1/2 comma–like with a twisted tip which is covered with pale setae; Cercus in medioventral view: basal expansion semicircular, without spines, a ridge separating the medial portion from the apical portion. Paraproct in lateral view: stout and very small (1/8 length of cercus). Paraproct in dorsal view: barely visible and slightly triangular.
♀ —Basal plate: species belonging to basal plate group 1 ( Fig. 38 View FIGURE 38 ), with dorsal side more than twice the length of ventral side. Posterior side with dorsal and ventral sections subequal. Dorsal side and dorsal section of posterior side straight, ventral section of posterior side concave ( Fig. 39G View FIGURE 39 ). Pectoral color pattern as in Fig. 40M View FIGURE 40 .
