Craspedophorus mandarinus (Schaum, 1853)
Schaum described this species from specimens collected in Hong Kong by M. Bowring, and commented it was very rare. Also listed for Hong Kong by Redtenbacher (1857), Chaudoir (1861b), Gemminger & Harold (1868), Chaudoir (1878), Fairmaire (1889), Bates (1892), Andrewes (1924), Jedlièka (1965a), Hill (1982), Hua (2002), Baehr (2003b), Häckel & Farka (2012) and Häckel & Kirschenhofer (2014b). Material: 1 ex. Hong Kong, Lantau, Mui Wo, 20.iv.06, commonly seen same day at this sandy locality; 1 ex. Hong Kong, Lam Tsuen valley, 27.iv.07 in banana plantation; Sight record Hong Kong, Lantau, Mui Wo, 27.iv.07 in sandy locality; sight record Hong Kong, Lam Tsuen valley, 28.iv.07 in banana plantation; sight record Hong Kong, Lantau, Mui Wo, 29.iv.06; 1 ex. Hong Kong, Lantau, Mui Wo, 6.v.07 in sandy locality; Pupa found 7.v.07 under stone with Chlaenius hamifer on edge of fresh water marsh. Close to gravel edge, but not close to sandy area, emerged into adult by 6 pm fallowing day; Sight record Hong Kong, Lantau, Mui Wo, 8.v.05; 1 ex. W.T.L., 12.v.15; Sight record Hong Kong, Lantau, Mui Wo, 15.v.06; Sight record Hong Kong, Lantau, Mui Wo, 18.v.06; Sight record Hong Kong, Lantau, Mui Wo, 10.vi.06; Sight record Hong Kong, Lantau, Mui Wo, 17.vi.06; 1 ex. Biology: Imago found April to July and December. Seems to have a preference for well drained (sandy) areas and possibly associated with banana trees. Possibly with a single generation emerging in May. Can be attracted to light. It may well be a lot commoner now than it was in the mid nineteenth century, when Schaum commented it was very rare. Fully winged.
