Diagnosis. The species is externally similar to C. zelleriella Heinemann, 1854 , C. quercicola Baldizzone & Oku, 1990 , C. kononenkoi Baldizzone & Savenkov, 2002 , C. teregnathella Baldizzone & Savenkov, 2002 , and C. curictae Baldizzone, 2016 . However, they can be distinguished from the latter by the following genital characteristics: 1) in the male genitalia of C. melanograpta ( Figs 15A, B View FIGURE 15 ), a narrowly elongated sacculus without a triangular tooth is present, in C. zelleriella (see Baldizzone 2016: Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 ), male genitalia possess the sacculus with a much angled dorsal corner, and a distinct small triangular tooth at the ventral corner, in C. quercicola ( Figs 15G, H View FIGURE 15 ), male genitalia possess the sacculus with a rounded distal margin having a triangular tooth in the middle, in C. kononenkoi ( Figs 14G, H View FIGURE 14 ), male genitalia possess the sacculus with a strongly curved distal margin featuring an indistinct wide expansion at the distal margin, in C. teregnathella (see Baldizzone & Savenkov 2002: Figs 8–10 View FIGURE 8 View FIGURE 9 View FIGURE 10 ), male genitalia possess a narrowly elongated sacculus featuring a ventro-distal triangular tooth, and in C. curictae (see Baldizzone 2016: Figs 3–5 View FIGURE 3 View FIGURE 4 View FIGURE 5 , 7 View FIGURE 7 ), male genitalia possess a much narrower oblong sacculus featuring a wide triangular tooth at the ventral corner; 2) in the female genitalia of C. melanograpta ( Fig. 18C View FIGURE 18 ), the spinulate section in the posterior 3/10 of the ductus bursae featuring the median lamina is present, in C. quercicola ( Fig. 19B View FIGURE 19 ) and C. zelleriella (see Baldizzone 2019: Pl. XXXIV, Fig. 101), female genitalia possess the ductus bursae without spinulate section, and in C. curictae (see Baldizzone 2016: Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 ), female genitalia possess similar characteristics (females of C. kononenkoi and C. teregnathella are unknown).
Adult ( Figs 9D View FIGURE 9 ; 11L View FIGURE 11 ): Forewing length 5.0–7.0 mm (wingspan 10.0– 15.5 mm) (n=36) ( Baldizzone & Oku 1990a: wingspan 11.0–13.0 mm; Li 2012: wingspan 13.0– 15.5 mm; Oku 2013: wingspan 11.0– 16.5 mm). See also Baldizzone (1989b: Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 ); Kim & Park (2009: Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 ); Li (2012: Pl. IV, Fig. 89); Oku (2013: Figs 3 View FIGURE 3 -30-37, 38); Park (2014: Pl. for adults, Fig. 19 View FIGURE 19 ).
Male genitalia ( Figs 15A, B View FIGURE 15 ; 23C View FIGURE 23 ): See also Baldizzone & Oku (1990a: Figs 12–14 View FIGURE12 View FIGURE13 View FIGURE 14 ); Park & Baldizzone (1992: Figs 2, 2a View FIGURE 2 ); Kim & Park (2009: Fig. 37); Li (2012: Fig. 89A); Park (2014: Figs 19A–D View FIGURE 19 ).
Female genitalia ( Figs 18C View FIGURE 18 ; 23D View FIGURE 23 ): See also Baldizzone & Oku (1990a: Figs 16 View FIGURE 16 , 17 View FIGURE 17 ); Park & Baldizzone (1992: Figs 16, 16c View FIGURE 16 ); Kim & Park (2009: Fig. 58); Li (2012: Fig. 89B); Park (2014: Fig. 19F View FIGURE 19 ).
Larval case (leaf skeletonizer): Pistol case. See Baldizzone & Oku (1990a: Figs 27–29 View FIGURE 27 View FIGURE 28 View FIGURE 29 ).
Host plants. [ Fagaceae ] Quercus mongolica Fisch. ex Ledeb. , Q. serrata Murray , Q. dentata Thunb. , and Q. acutissima Carruth. ( Baldizzone & Oku 1990a; Falkovitsh 2006; Oku 2013).
Distribution. China, Korea, Japan, Russia (Far East) ( Baldizzone et al. 2006; Kim & Park 2009; Park 2014; Anikin 2019).
Remarks. The species was first reported from Korea by Park & Baldizzone (1992). The inclusion of Korea in the distribution of this species by Baldizzone (1989b) was done in anticipation of Park & Baldizzone (1992) presenting this species.
