Diagnosis. The species is highly similar to C. falkovitshella Vives, 1984 , and C. fasciella Koo & Baldizzone, 2020 , but can be distinguished by the following genital characteristics: 1) in the male genitalia of C. artemisicolella (see Baldizzone 2019: Pl. GM LXIV, Fig. 205), the two juxtal rods with a triangular tooth near about each distal 1/4, and the cornutus consisting of two joined spines with a robust base are present, while in C. falkovitshella (see Richter 2022) and C. fasciella ( Figs 13I, J View FIGURE13 ), juxtal rods are with a triangular dorsal tooth near the apex, and a much longer than cornutus; 2) in the female genitalia of C. artemisicolella (see Baldizzone 2019: Pl. GF LXIX, Fig. 205), the apophyses anteriores do not exceed anteriorly beyond the middle point of the spinulate section of the ductus bursae, and the spinulate section has a twist, which is about 1.7–1.9× longer than the colliculum, while in C. falkovitshella ( Fig. 17C View FIGURE 17 ), female genitalia possess the apophyses anteriores almost reaching the anterior end of the spinulate section, and the spinulate section, of the same length as the colliculum, without a twist, and in C. fasciella ( Fig. 17D View FIGURE 17 ), female genitalia possess the apophyses anteriores exceeding beyond the middle point of the spinulate section, and the spinulate section with a twist, which is about 1.3–1.5× longer than the colliculum.
The comparison of barcode sequences within the species retrieved from GenBank (accession nos. HM871573.1, HM876377.1, HM875737.1, KF523760.1, JN248884.1) indicates a p-distance range of 0.0–0.4%. In comparison, the barcode sequences of the closely related species, C. falkovitshella (GenBank accession no. PP596136) and C. fasciella (GenBank accession nos. MT394458–MT394461, PP907819–PP907824), obtained in this study, exhibit a p-distance ranges of 1.5–1.7% and 1.4–1.8%, respectively.
Adult: ( Benander 1939: wingspan 10.0–13.0 mm; Toll 1953: wingspan 10.0–13.0 mm; Moriuti 1982a: wingspan 11.0 mm; Oku 2013: wingspan 8.5–11.5 mm; Baldizzone 2019: wingspan 10.0–13.0 mm). See Moriuti (1982b: Pl. 12, Fig. 49); Oku (2013: Figs 3 View FIGURE 3 -31-26, 27); Baldizzone (2019: Pl. AD XXXVII, Fig. 212).
Male genitalia: See Benander (1939: Pl. V, Fig. 68); Hackman (1945: Fig. 107); Toll (1953: Fig. 129); Patzak (1974: Fig. 206); Oku (2013: Fig. Col1-18); Baldizzone (2019: Pl. GM LXIV, Fig. 205).
Female genitalia: See Hackman (1945: Fig. 143); Toll (1953: Fig. 285); Patzak (1974: Fig. 326); Oku (2013: Fig. Col2-19); Baldizzone (2019: Pl. GF LXIX, Fig. 205).
Larval case [seed (primarily) and leaf (rarely) miner]: Seed case (trivalved). See Toll (1962: Pl. 27 S, Fig. 256); Patzak (1974: Fig. 89); Baldizzone (2019: Pl. AST XXVI, Fig. 186); Jinbo & Suzuki (2023).
Host plants. [ Asteraceae ] Artemisia vulgaris L. ( Baldizzone 2019) and A. montana (Nakai) Pamp. ( Falkovitsh 2006; Oku 2013).
Distribution. Northern and Central Europe, France, Italy, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Russia (Western and Southern European part, Western and Southern Siberia, Far East), China, Japan ( Anikin 2019; Baldizzone 2019), Korea ( Sohn et al. 2016).
Remarks. The species was not previously listed in Korean records, likely due to the oversight of the Korean specimen utilized in Sohn et al. (2016) during their phylogenetic research on the superfamily Gelechioidea . However, its presence has been definitively confirmed through the specimen documented in Appendix S2 of Sohn et al. (2016). The specimen, identified with voucher no. SWC-06-0208 and GenBank accession no. KF523760, was collected by Cho Soowon & Lim Eun-Ji from “Weolag [[misspelling of Wol-ag (=Worak)]] Mountain, Gwangcheonri, Deogsan-myeon, Jecheon-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, KOREA; 36.888 N 128.149 E [[ N36° 53′ 16.99″ E128° 08′ 56.53″; Alt. 331 m ]]” on “ Sep 17, 2006 ”. We have confirmed the presence of the species through this verification, rectifying the earlier oversight and adding a record to the distribution of C. artemisicolella in Korea. However, as of now, no new specimens have been recorded since that time.
