Diagnosis. The species shares similarities in both external and genital characteristics with C. saxicolella ( Duponchel, 1843) , and C. alecturella Baldizzone, 1989 . However, it can be distinguished from the latter by the following genital characteristics: 1) in the male genitalia of C. sternipennella ( Figs 16C, D View FIGURE 16 ), an ovaloid transtilla without spines, the sacculus without a small triangular expansion, two juxtal rods, one of them featuring a triangular dorsal tooth right before the apex, and the other featuring a larger dorsal tooth at the subapex and a triangular dorsal tooth bearing spines near the base, and cornuti forming a curved linear formation are present, while in C. saxicolella (see Baldizzone 2019: Pl. GM LVIII, Fig. 186), male genitalia possess the transtilla featuring spines at the dorsal base, the sacculus with a ventral triangular expansion, relatively thicker two juxtal rods, one of them with a small triangular dorsal tooth at the subbase, and cornuti forming a shorter and curved linear formation, and in C. alecturella (see Baldizzone 1989b: Figs 82, 84, 85), male genitalia possess the transtilla without spines, the sacculus without a ventral triangular expansion, two juxtal rods, one of them with a triangular dorsal tooth at the middle and a small rounded tooth right before the apex, and cornuti forming a curved linear formation; 2) in the female genitalia of C. sternipennella ( Fig. 19E View FIGURE 19 ), a slightly curved colliculum to the left is present, while in C. saxicolella (see Baldizzone 2019: Pl. GF LXIII, Fig. 187), a slightly curved colliculum to the right is present (female of C. alecturella is unknown).
Adult ( Figs 10C View FIGURE 10 ; 12G View FIGURE12 ): Forewing length 5.5–6.0 mm (wingspan 10.5–12.0 mm) (n=16) ( Benander 1939: wingspan 11.0–15.0 mm; Toll 1953: wingspan 11.0–15.0 mm; Li 2012: wingspan 10.0– 12.5 mm; Oku 2013: wingspan 10.5–12.5 mm; Baldizzone 2019: wingspan 12.0–15.0 mm). See also Kim & Park (2009: Fig. 21 View FIGURE 21 ); Li (2012: Pl. V, Fig. 97); Oku (2013: Figs 3 View FIGURE 3 -31-15–17); Park (2014: Pl. for adults, Fig. 25 View FIGURE 25 ); Baldizzone (2019: Pl. AD XXXIV, Fig. 194).
Male genitalia ( Figs 16C, D View FIGURE 16 ; 24H View FIGURE 24 ): See also Benander (1939: Pl. V, Fig.73); Hackman (1945: Fig. 123); Toll (1953: Fig. 122); Patzak (1974: Fig. 200); Kim & Park (2009: Fig. 43); Li (2012: Fig. 97A); Oku (2013: Fig. Col1- 14); Park (2014: Fig. 25 View FIGURE 25 ); Baldizzone (2019: Pl. GM LVIII, Fig. 187).
Female genitalia ( Figs 19E View FIGURE 19 ; 25A View FIGURE 25 ): See also Benander (1939: Pl. VI, Fig. 85); Hackman (1945: Fig. 164); Toll (1953: Fig. 278); Patzak (1974: Fig. 332); Li (2012: Fig. 97B); Oku (2013: Fig. Col2-15); Baldizzone (2019: Pl. GF LXIII, Fig. 188).
Larval case (seed miner) ( Figs 26F–H View FIGURE 26 ): Tubular silken case (trivalved). See also Toll (1962: Pl. 12 S, Fig. 153); Patzak (1974: Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 ); Jinbo & Suzuki (2023).
Host plants. [ Amaranthaceae ] Chenopodium L. ( Ch. giganteum D.Don and Ch. acuminatum Willd. (some recorded as Ch. album var. centrorubrum Makino and Ch. stenophyllum (Makino) Koidz. , respectively), Atriplex L., and Suaeda Scop. ( Baldizzone 1979a; Falkovitsh 2006; Oku 2013; Baldizzone 2019).
Distribution. Almost all of Europe, Caucasus, Russia (European part, Southern Siberia, Far East), Japan, Korea ( Baldizzone et al. 2006; Kim & Park 2009; Park 2014; Anikin 2019; Baldizzone 2019; Anikin & Knyazev 2024), China ( Li 2012).
Remarks. According to Kim & Park (2009), the species was first reported from Korea by Baldizzone & Savenkov (2002). However, Korea was included in the distribution of this species without examining Korean specimens. There may be earlier Korean records, but we have not yet traced them.
