Diagnosis. The species shares external and genital characteristics with C. pratella Zeller, 1871 . However, it can be distinguished from the latter by the following genital characteristics: 1) in the male genitalia of C. therinella ( Figs 16E, F View FIGURE 16 ), a rhomboid transtilla with a curved dorsal expansion, the sacculus without a triangular ventral expansion, and asymmetrical two juxtal rods, one being elongated with a large irregular dorsal tooth right before the apex, and the other being broadly expanded with a large irregular dorsal tooth at the distal 1/3, are present, while in C. pratella (see Baldizzone 2019: Pl. GM LVII, Fig. 182), male genitalia possess a ribbon-like transtilla, the sacculus with a blunt triangular ventral expansion, and asymmetrical two juxtal rods, one being curved at the middle and with an elongated ovaloid expansion at the apex, and the other being broad in the middle and with a sturdy curved thorn-like process and a large expansion in the middle; 2) in the female genitalia of C. therinella ( Fig. 20A View FIGURE 20 ), a large ovaloid ostium bursae, and a slightly wide ductus bursae are present, while in C. pratella (see Baldizzone 2019: Pl. GF LXI, Fig. 183), female genitalia possess a smaller ostium bursae, and a relatively slender ductus bursae.

Adult ( Figs 10D View FIGURE 10 ; 12H View FIGURE12 ): Forewing length 6.0– 8.5 mm (wingspan 12.0– 16.5 mm) (n=32) ( Benander 1939: wingspan 15.0–17.0 mm; Toll 1953: wingspan 13.0–17.0 mm; Moriuti 1982a: wingspan 14.0–15.0 mm; Li 2012: wingspan 13.0–16.0 mm; Oku 2013: wingspan 14.0– 15.5 mm; Baldizzone 2019: wingspan 13.0–16.0 mm;). See also Moriuti (1982b: Pl. 12, Fig. 44); Kim & Park (2009: Fig. 22 View FIGURE 22 ); Li (2012: Pl. V, Fig. 98); Oku (2013: Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 -31-5) [ Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 -31-5 labeled as C. kurokoi in error]; Park (2014: Pl. for adults, Fig. 26 View FIGURE 26 ); Baldizzone (2019: Pl. AD XXXIII, Fig. 188).

Male genitalia ( Figs 16E, F View FIGURE 16 ; 25B View FIGURE 25 ): See also Benander (1939: Pl. II, Fig. 40); Toll (1942a: Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ); Hackman (1945: Fig. 95); Toll (1953: Fig. 116); Patzak (1974: Fig. 197); Park & Baldizzone (1992: Figs 6, 6a View FIGURE 6 ); Kim & Park (2009: Figs 44–44b); Li (2012: Fig. 98A); Kusunoki & Oku (2012: Fig. 28 View FIGURE 28 ); Park (2014: Figs 26A–C View FIGURE 26 ); Baldizzone (2019: Pl. GM LVI, Fig. 181).

Female genitalia ( Figs 20A View FIGURE 20 ; 25C View FIGURE 25 ): See also Toll (1942a: Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 ); Hackman (1945: Fig. 136); Toll (1953: Fig. 273); Patzak (1974: Fig. 325); Kim & Park (2009: Fig. 62); Li (2012: Fig. 98B); Kusunoki & Oku (2012: Fig. 31); Park (2014: Fig. 26E View FIGURE 26 ); Baldizzone (2019: Pl. GF LXI, Fig. 182).

Larval case (seed miner): Tubular silken case (trivalved). See Hering (1957: Fig. 194); Toll (1962: Pl. 4 S, Fig. 55); Park & Baldizzone (1992: Figs 18, 18c View FIGURE 18 ); Kusunoki & Oku (2012: Figs 14–16 View FIGURE 14 View FIGURE 15 View FIGURE 16 ); Baldizzone (2019: Pl. AST XXIII, Fig. 167).

Host plants. [ Polygonaceae ] Fallopia convolvulus (L.) Á.Löve, F. dumetorum (L.) Holub, Reynoutria japonica Houtt. (some recorded as Fallopia japonica (Houtt.) Ronse Decr. ); [ Asteraceae ] Carduus L. and Cirsium Mill. ( Baldizzone 1979a; Falkovitsh 2006; Oku 2013; Baldizzone 2019). Falkovitsh (2006) also listed Carduus L., Cirsium Mill. , Carlina L., and Centaurea L. (all Asteraceae ), but marked the hosts as, in the author’s opinion, having been erroneously used in previous literature.

Distribution. Almost all of Europe, Caucasus, Russia (Western and Southern European part, Southern and Eastern Siberia, Far East), Mongolia, Japan ( Baldizzone et al. 2006; Anikin & Knyazev 2024), Korea ( Kim & Park 2009; Park 2014; Anikin 2019; Baldizzone 2019), China ( Li 2012).

Remarks. The species was first reported from Korea by Park & Baldizzone (1992).

Kim & Park (2009), Kim et al. (2013b), and Park (2014) previously documented the distribution of the species, including North America. However, the record from North America reported by Lafontaine et al. (2010) was considered as erroneous by Pohl et al. (2016), who noted that the species is not known to occur in North America.
