Diagnosis. The species is somewhat similar to C. olympica Baldizzone, 1983 , and C. colinplanti Baldizzone & Richter 2022 , in sharing a setose valvula featuring a distinct nail-shaped seta, and a conical phallotheca. However, it can be distinguished from the latter by the following male genital characteristics: in those of C. serinipennella ( Figs 15I, J View FIGURE 15 ), the cucullus free from the dorso-distal part of the valvula, a broader sacculus without a nail-shaped seta, a distinct longitudinal sclerite of the outer tube, and no cornutus are present, while in C. olympica (see Baldizzone & Richter 2022: Tab.1, Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 ) and C. colinplanti (see Baldizzone & Richter 2022: Tab.1, Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ), male genitalia possess the cucullus free from the dorsal corner of the valvula, a narrower sacculus, no longitudinal sclerite of the outer tube, and cornuti forming a curved linear formation. Additionally, in those of C. colinplanti , a nail-shaped seta at the distal part of the sacculus.
Adult ( Figs 10A View FIGURE 10 ; 12E View FIGURE12 ): Forewing length 6.0– 8.5 mm (wingspan 13.0– 17.5 mm) (n=10) ( Oku 2013: wingspan 14.0–16.0 mm; Baldizzone 2019: wingspan 14.0–17.0 mm). See also Oku (2013: Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 -30-22); Baldizzone (2019: Pl. AD XI, Fig. 69); Koo et al. (2023: Figs 1A–L View FIGURE 1 ).
Male genitalia ( Figs 15I, J View FIGURE 15 ; 24D View FIGURE 24 ): See also Toll (1944: Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 : C. deserticola ); Baldizzone (2019: Pl. GM XXI, Fig. 67); Koo et al. (2023: Figs 2A–C View FIGURE 2 ).
Female genitalia ( Figs 19C View FIGURE 19 ; 24E View FIGURE 24 ): See also Toll (1944: Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 : C. deserticola ); Baldizzone (2019: Pl. GF XXIII, Fig. 68); Koo et al. (2023: Figs 2E–I View FIGURE 2 ).
Larva and pupa (gall-making stem borer) ( Figs 28B–E View FIGURE 28 ; 29A–E View FIGURE 29 ): See also Falkovitsh (1988: Fig. 28 View FIGURE 28 ); Baldizzone (2019: Pl. AST VIII, Figs 63, 64: gall (cecidium)); Jinbo & Suzuki (2023).
Host plants. [ Amaranthaceae ] Atriplex L. ( A. subcordata Kitag. , A. halimus L., A. mollis Desf. , and A. muricata Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd. ), Halimione Aellen ( H. portulacoides (L.) Aellen (some recorded as A. portulacoides L.)), Chenopodium L. ( Ch. giganteum D.Don (some recorded as Ch. album var. centrorubrum Makino ) ( Falkovitsh 2006; Oku 2013; Baldizzone 2019), and Ch. album L. ( Figs 28A, B View FIGURE 28 ). Falkovitsh (2006) also listed Suaeda Scop. , but marked the host as, in the author’s opinion, having been erroneously used in previous literature.
Distribution. Portugal, Spain, France, Southern and Central Europe, Romania, Balkans, Caucasus, Ukraine, Russia (Southern European part, Southern and Western Siberia, Far East), Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Central Asia, Japan, Korea, Australia ( Baldizzone 1994; Baldizzone et al. 2006; Anikin 2019; Baldizzone 2023; Koo et al. 2023; Anikin & Knyazev 2024).
Remarks. The species was first reported from Korea by Koo et al. (2023).
