Differential Diagnosis. Based on color, size, and most dorsal characters this species will key to H. (Spanglerina) ingens Perkins ( Perkins 1980: 216) ; it differs therefrom in smaller size (ca. 1.83 vs. 1.92 mm), in having the pronotal midlongitudinal carina complete (on most specimens), the prothorax more angularly produced laterally, the metatibiae of males without a brush of setae, and the aedeagus ( Fig. 17 View FIGURE 17 ).
Description. Size: holotype (length/width, mm): body (length to elytral apices) 1.83/0.88; head width 0.45; pronotum 0.42/0.67, PA 0.49, PB 0.44; elytra 1.15/0.88. Habitus as illustrated ( Fig. 17 View FIGURE 17 ). Dorsum very dark reddish brown to almost black, legs and maxillary palpi slightly lighter; teneral specimens light reddish brown. Dorsum of head and pronotum dull, densely contiguously distinctly micropunctulate. Frons disc in posterior coarsely punctate; deep foveola median to each eye. Frontoclypeal suture recurved, markedly arcuate to rear in midline. Labroclypeal suture straight, with well defined lateral angles. Labrum bilobed, constricted at base, each lobe asymmetrical, sides of deep median emargination straight, ended slightly beyond midlength of labrum. Eyes small, width of each eye ca 1/5 interocular distance.
Pronotum sides not margined, coarsely denticulate; sides markedly produced at middle, straight or very slightly arcuate and convergent to anterior angles, emarginate and markedly convergent to posterior 0.17, thence parallel to midline to posterior angles; anterior border nearly straight and nearly perpendicular to midline in lateral 0.25, moderately arcuate to rear in middle 0.50; posterior border slightly arcuate to rear. Reliefs of pronotum coarsely densely contiguously punctate, punctures much larger than those of frons. Posterointernal foveolae moderately developed, with large punctures. Anterointernal foveolae well developed, very distinctly micropunctulate, but without punctures. Posterior callosities well developed, large and rounded. antero- and posteroexternal foveolae large and deep, confluent with wide channel-like micropunctulate depression. Furrow adjacent to lateral margin wide. Pronotum often with very low, narrow midlongitudinal ridge (very weak on holotype).
Elytra dull, disc with 10 rows of large, deep, contiguous punctures between suture and humeral callus, without apparent setae, punctures becoming gradually smaller posteriorly, rows very straight. Intervals and interstices narrow ridges, shining. Explanate margin very wide, extended to elytral apices, with denticulations at anterior angles, remainder with fine serrations. Elytral apices, in posterior aspect, not forming angle with one another.
Venter: Mentum finely moderately densely punctulate. Submentum very finely contiguously punctulate. Genae with posterior ridge. Prosternum carinate between coxae, not produced anteriorly as spine; coxae widely separated. Mesovenrite with internal and external carinae divergent from anterior to posterior; median low carina ended near base of intercoxal process; width of intercoxal process at apex subequal to distance between internal and median carinae, transversely slightly convex, without median longitudinal ridge. Metaventrite deeply concave between very widely separated plaques; plaques reduced to very short, sharp, peaked carinae, located in midlength of metasternum, separation ca. 5/6 midline length of metaventrite; metaventrite tumid lateral to each plaque.
Abdomen: Intercoxal segment very transverse, arcuate, glabrous, posterior aspect declivous. Segment 7 with deep notch at apex (male). Legs: Protibia weakly arcuate, expanded on inner margin over distal 1/3. Mesotibia very slightly arcuate. Metatibia very slightly arcuate, without brush of hairs at apex. Genitalia: Aedeagus as illustrated ( Fig. 17 View FIGURE 17 ).
Distribution. Currently known only from the states of Puebla and Veracruz, Mexico.
Etymology. Named in honor of Roberto Arce Perez, in recognition of his contributions to Mexican water beetle taxonomy.
Remarks. The male genitalia of members of Hydraena (Spanglerina) are very complex, and have long and dense paramere setae that envelope and obscure the main-piece. To clearly see the main-piece apical part it is necessary to remove the parameres. This has been done to the specimens that are illustrated ( Figs. 17–20 View FIGURE 17 View FIGURE 18 View FIGURE 19 View FIGURE 20 ). The habitus views of the three previously described species are also given herein because they were not included in the original descriptions.
The imaged paratype aedeagus of H. (Spanglerina) arcei , new species, which has the parameres separate from the main-piece ( Fig. 17 View FIGURE 17 ), has the following locality data: Mexico: Veracruz, Río Huehueyapan, Agua Alegre GoogleMaps , 24.x.2001, 19°26’55’’ N, 96°58’ 54’’W, 1195 m R. Arce col. The habitus and aedeagus images of H. brevis Sharp ( Fig. 18 View FIGURE 18 ), are from a specimen with the following locality data: Guatemala: Alta verapaz, 20 mi. W. La Tinta , 7.vi.1974, rapid tropical stream, leg. M. E. and P. D. Perkins. The habitus and aedeagus images of H. frondsicola Perkins ( Fig. 19 View FIGURE 19 ), are from a specimen with the following locality data: Mexico: Nayarit, 11 mi. SW Compostela , tropical stream, 20.vii.1974, leg. M. E. and P. D. Perkins. The habitus and aedeagus images of H. ingens Perkins ( Fig. 20 View FIGURE 20 ), are from a specimen with the following locality data: Mexico: Estado de México, Villa Guerrero, Totolmajac GoogleMaps , 16.iv.1990, 18°55’08’’ N, 99°40’54’’ W, 2010 m, Arroyito, R. Arce col.
New collection records for H. brevis Sharp and H. ingens Perkins are given in the New distribution records section.
