World distribution. Originally from Europe and Africa. In South America is found in Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Chile.
Chilean distribution. Recorded only from Valparaíso to Metropolitan region ( Fig. 44 View FIGURE 44 ).
Altitudinal range. Inland valleys in the Mediterranean ecosystem (140– 600 m.a.s.l.).
Biology and notes. Eristalinus taeniops is an exotic and synanthropic species. Thompson (1999a) reported it for the first time from Chile in two localities without details of them. However, the distribution in our country is wider due to data reported by the flower fly citizen science project (R. Barahona-Segovia, pers. obs.). Eristalinus taeniops has been collected visiting ornamental flowers such as Veronica sp., and Viburnum sp. at different parts in the Metropolitan, Valparaíso and Coquimbo regions (Rodrigo Barahona-Segovia and Pablo Moreno, CSP records; Figs 42–43 View FIGURES 40–43 ), Hedera helix L. (Esteban Gómez, Doris Pinto and Victoria Kunst, CSP records), Senecio tamoides DC. (Rodrigo Campillay, CSP record); Calendula sp. (Victoria Kunst, CSP record), and E. pectinatus (Alexis Cáceres, Eriehl Aguilera, Gabriela Germain, and Orlando Montes, CSP records) as well as native plants and trees as Baccharis linearis (Ruiz & Pav.) Pers. (Asiel Olivares, CSP record) and Q. saponaria (César Martínez, CSP record).
Conservation status. Not evaluated because this species is considered exotic.
