2. Ilex corallina Franchet (1886: 452) View in CoL . Type:— CHINA. Yunnan, Dali , Ta-mi-tang, 12.Jun. 1885, Delavay 927 (holotype: P; isotypes: E, K, KUN)
Ilex wangiana S.Y. Hu (1950a: 54) View in CoL , syn. nov. Ilex corallina var. wangiana (S.Y. Hu) Y.R. Li (1985: 16) View in CoL . Type:— CHINA. Yunnan, Wei-se (Weixi), Jul. 1935, C. W. Wang 64164 (holotype: A; isotypes: KUN, PE); Yunnan, Mekong Valley , 27°50 ′ N, 2130 m, Nov. 1919, G. Forrest 15487 (paratype: E) .
Y.R. Li (1985) reduced Ilex wangiana View in CoL to a variety of I. corallina View in CoL , but Chen and his co-authors ( Chen et al., 2008) restored it to the specific rank. Hu (1950a) stated in her protologue of I. wangiana View in CoL that “The species is closely related to Ilex corallina … But View in CoL it can be easily distinguished from the latter by its pubescent fruits and its pubescent branchlets and lower leaf-surfaces”. I found, however, that there is a continuous series of intermediate forms between the typical I. wangiana View in CoL and I. corallina View in CoL . For example, Forrest 10513 and 11232, which were identified by Hu as I. corallina View in CoL , have sparsely puberulent fruits, while Forrest 28997, also identified by Hu as I. corallina View in CoL , has glabrous branchlets but sparsely puberulent fruits and veins on the lower leaf surface. Thus, I. wangiana View in CoL can be considered as just an extreme form of I. corallina View in CoL .
