Material examined. HOLOTYPE: „, S387„, 31 July 2001, S. Lamatano, Kalaka, Buton, Sulawesi Tenggara, Indonesia . PARATYPE 1: S413”; PARATYPE 2: S386„; PARATYPE 3: S414„, 2 August 2001, Lambusanga Reserve , Buton, Sulawesi Tenggara, Indonesia .
Description. Male: body round, narrower anteriorly; length 554, width 513. R 2, D2–D4 located on large dorsal plate; length 498, width 431. Dorsal furrow complete. EpI just projecting beyond the anterior idiosoma. Ventral shield heavily sclerotized with indistinct epimeral suture lines. Genital field with three pairs of acetabula; genital opening oval, length 106, width 41. Pedipalp sculptured, PIV box-like ventrally with sharp lateral edges, with two setae located on large ventral projection at proximal end and a small ventral seta distally; length PI –PV 28–30, 73–74, 35–39, 93–96, 31–36. Anus 63 posterior to genital opening. Legs with swimming setae II-Leg-4 1, II-Leg-5 1, III-Leg-3 2, III-Leg-4 6, III- Leg-5 6, IV-Leg-3 2, IV-Leg-4 3z6, IV-Leg-5 6. Length I-Leg-3–6 43–47, 47–49, 79, 102; II-Leg-3–6 45, 49–55, 76–83, 100–108; III-Leg-3–6 43–47, 67–69, 75–81, 88–93; IV-Leg-3–6 55–61, 78–87, 89–98, 94–98.
Female: body round, narrower anteriorly; length 626, width 584. Dorsal plate oval; length 581, width 487. Pedipalp same as male, length PI –PV 30, 75, 38, 90, 31. Ventral shield heavily sclerotized with indistinct epimeral suture lines. Genital field with three pairs of acetabula; genital opening oval, wider than male, length 132, width 73. Anus 62 posterior to genital opening. Legs with swimming setae II-Leg-4 2, II-Leg-5 5, III-Leg-4 6, III-Leg-5 7, IV-Leg-3 1z2, IV-Leg-4 3z6, IV-Leg-5 7. Length I-Leg-3–6 46, 48, 80, 102; II-Leg-3–6 48, 59, 89, 109; III-Leg-3–6 50, 76, 89, 96; IV-Leg-3–6 70, 96, 104, 101.
Etymology. This species is named after Dr Graeme Gillespie.
Remarks. The venter of M. gillespiei is similar to M. orientalis Wiles, 1999 but the pedipalp PIV differs considerably. The flattened shape of the larger ventral projection and the angular shape of the ventral margin of PIV are diagnostic of the species.
