Description. Adult. Colouration. Head and thorax dorsally varying from light orange to dark brown; thoracic dorsum darker laterally, lighter on disc. Genal processes sometimes reddish. Eyes grey, ocelli dull yellow to grey. Antennal segments 1 dark brown, 2 brown, 3–8 yellowish, often with distinctly dark apex, 9 and 10 almost black. Ventral side of genal processes yellow at base, reddish to dark brown at apex; head and clypeus yellow; rostrum with black tip. Thorax with yellow patches laterally and ventrally. Fore and mid legs almost black, hind legs varying from almost white to black. Forewing ( Figs 7 View FIGURES 1–10 , 42 View FIGURES 39–50 ) coriaceous, dark brown to almost black with light irregular spots and transverse light band at base which is separated from rest of wing by dark brown oblique streak. Hindwing semitransparent, greyish, with slightly darker veins. Abdomen orange to almost black. Dark colour more expanded in older specimens.
Structure. Head inclined in a 45° angle from longitudinal body axis. Vertex trapezoidal, 0.6–0.8 times as long as wide. Genal processes ( Fig. 46 View FIGURES 39–50 ) 0.8–1.0 times as long as vertex along midline, relatively broad, anteriorly deeply incised, forming a narrower submedian and a broader lateral tubercle, respectively. Antenna 1.4–1.7 times as long as head width; relative length of segment 10 and terminal setae as 1.0:0.9:0.6. Rostrum short, only tip visible in profile, 0.4–0.5 times as long as head width. Pro- and mesotibiae thickened and slightly flattened; protibia 1.5 times as long as profemur ( Fig. 50 View FIGURES 39–50 ), metatibia 0.9–1.1 times as long as head width, with 5 relatively evenly spaced sclerotised apical spurs. Forewing ( Figs 7 View FIGURES 1–10 , 42 View FIGURES 39–50 ) oval, 3.1–3.8 times as long as head width, 1.8–1.9 times as long as wide; pterostigma relatively long, ending at level of apical third of Rs; cell cu 1 0.8–1.0 times higher than wide; surface spinules forming cellular pattern covering the entire wing except for area near base. Hindwing with costal setae more or less evenly spaced, not arranged in groups; short vein M+Cu developed. Male and female terminalia as in Figs 54, 58 View FIGURES 51–60 , 67–70 View FIGURES 61–70 . Male proctiger 0.4–0.5 times as long as head width. Paramere broadest near base, irregularly narrowing to relatively narrow apex. Female proctiger 1.0 times as long as head width; circumanal ring 0.3–0.4 times as long as proctiger; female subgenital plate 0.6–0.7 times as long as proctiger.
Measurements (in mm) (2 ♂, 2 ♀). Head width ♂ 0.56–0.66, ♀ 0.58–0.62; antenna length ♂ 0.88–0.90, ♀ 0.88–0.96; forewing length ♂ 1.82–2.00, ♀ 2.16–2.34; male proctiger length 0.24–0.26; paramere length 0.22; length of distal segment of aedeagus 0.24; female proctiger length 0.60.
Fifth instar immature ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 11–21 ). Colouration. Sclerites light brown dorsally, yellowish ventrally, membranes yellow. Eyes red. Antenna brown. Rostrum almost black. Legs yellow with brown tibiae and tarsi. Forewing pad darker at base and lighter in apical two thirds; hindwing pad light basally adjacent to forewing pad, darker brown apically. Caudal plate brown with lighter median, longitudinal stripe dorsally; wax pores yellowish.
Structure. Body 1.3 times as long as wide. Antenna 0.9 times as long as forewing pad. Lateral margin of forewing pad evenly curved, giving the wing pad a more ovoid look. Hindwing pad with one marginal sectasetae each. Caudal plate 1.2 times as wide as long; with 4+4 marginal sectasetae, lacking a pair of submedian dorsal sectasetae ( Fig. 60 View FIGURES 51–60 ).
Measurements (in mm) and ratios (1 immature). Body length 1.34, antenna length 0.52; forewing pad length 0.58; caudal plate width 0.68.
Etymology. Noun in apposition. This species is dedicated to the Tupi, indigenous South American people who inhabited almost all of Brazil’s coast before the arrival of the Portuguese. Like many other indigenous people, they were almost completely annihilated by the European colonialists.
Distribution. Brazil (BA, GO, MG, MS, MT, PR, SP).
Host plant, biology and habitat. Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. —The immatures induce leaf rolls in which they develop.—Cerrado vegetation, transitional Antlantic/cerrado forest, riparian/gallery forest, parks, degraded areas, various plantations.
Comments. Colophorina tupi differs from the Old World Colophorina species in the strongly inflated pro- and mesotibiae and the broadly rounded forewing. From the New World species, it differs as indicated in the key, i.e. in details of the forewing pattern and the shape of the genal processes. The terminalia of the four species are similar; the paramere in C. tupi is irregularly narrowing to apex and slender near the apex.
