Description. Adult. Colouration. Coronal suture and a longitudinal submedian stripe on either side of the former, as well as dorsal margin of antennal insertion dark brown or black. Antennal segments 4–6 brown basally, almost black apically. Thoracic dorsum with whitish pattern consisting of spots and longitudinal lines. Younger specimens with less extended dark colour.

Structure. Antenna 3.9–4.2 times as long as head width. Clypeus, in ventral view, indented in the middle anteriorly. Rostrum moderately long, 0.6 times as long as head width, segment 3 1.3 times as long as segment 2 ( Fig. 176 View FIGURES 175–184 ). Forewing ( Fig. 182 View FIGURES 175–184 ) 2.9–3.1 times as long as head width, 2.7 times as long as wide; cell cu 1 0.6–0.7 times higher than wide; surface spinules in cell r 2 above bifurcation of M densely, irregularly spaced. Metatibia 0.8–1.0 times as long as head width. Terminalia as in Figs 191 View FIGURES 185–196 , 212–214 View FIGURES 197–220 . Male proctiger 0.5 times as long as head width. Paramere, in profile, weakly curved, weakly, irregularly narrowing to apex; outer face with long, evenly spaced hairs; apex strongly sclerotised, forming an inward directed ridge; inner face with long setae particularly in basal half. Distal portion of aedeagus strongly inflated in apical third, with small apico-ventral tooth. Female proctiger 0.8 times as long as head width, dorsal outline relatively straight, apical process not inflated; circumanal ring 0.3 times as long as proctiger. Female subgenital plate 0.7 times as long as proctiger, ventral outline, in profile, relatively evenly curved; apex forming large point.

Measurements (in mm) and ratios (1 ♂, 1 ♀). Head width ♂ 0.86, ♀ 0.96; antenna length ♂ 3.62, ♀ 3.70; fore- wing length ♂ 2.46, ♀ 3.00; male proctiger length 0.40; paramere length 0.22; length of distal segment of aedeagus 0.28; female proctiger length 0.72.

Fifth instar immature unknown.

Etymology. Noun in apposition. From Greek πυκνóς = thick and πέος = penis for the thick apical dilatation of the distal segment of aedeagus.

Distribution. Brazil (MG, GO).

Host plant, biology and habitat. Adults were collected on Hymenaea stigonocarpa Hayne var. pubescens Benth. and on Bowdichia virgilioides Kunth (Leguminosae) . The former is a likely host but not the latter.

Comments. Platycorypha pycnopeus differs from other species of the Platycorypha atrifrons -group in dark ventral margin of the toruli which is light in all other species, and as indicated in the key.
