Salinator quoyana ( Potiez & Michaud, 1838)
Ampullacera quoyana Potiez & Michaud, 1838: 288 , figs. 17, 18.
Ampullarina quoyana ; Angas 1867: 232. Authority attributed to Deshayes, not of Potiez & Michaud. Salinator quoyana ; Cotton & Godfrey 1932: 151. Not of Potiez & Michaud. Salinator fragilis View in CoL ; Woolacott 1945: 1.
Remarks: The type of Ampullacera quoyana Potiez & Michaud , along with other material described by Potiez and Michaud was probably in the Douai Museum, which was destroyed during World War II. The original description distinguishes the taxon from Salinator fragilis on shell size (“smaller”, dimensions not given), colour (“darker”) and surface texture (“smoother”). Potiez & Michaud’s (1838) A. quoyana is unlocalised and lacks sufficient detail for identification. Since its description, other amphiboloid specimens have been incorrectly attributed to this species identity. For example, there is a lot of material in the Musée Histoire Naturelle, Paris, labelled as Ampullacera quoyana , collected in ‘New Holland’ ( Australia), which are actually Phallomedusa solida and not potential type material (Bouchet, personal communication). Further confusion surrounds the species identity, as Angas (1867) identified the authority as Deshayes, and both Angas (1867) and Cotton & Godfrey (1932) provide descriptions of the shell of S. quoyana which mention the zigzag patterning typical of Phallomedusa gen. nov.. Consequently, in the absence of extant authors’ material and the imprecise nature of the original description of A. quoyana , this name is treated here as a nomen dubium.
