Type species Amphibola solida Martens, 1878 .
Etymology: Phallos (Greek—penis), Medusa (Greek—gorgon) typically depicted with snake-like hair reminiscent of the tentacle-like appendages on the penises of this genus. Diagnosis: As for family.
Remarks: This genus contains the species formerly recognised as Salinator solida and a new species described below.
