Neonesidea manningi Maddocks, 1975 View in CoL

Figure 13 View FIGURE 13 A–F, Figure 14 View FIGURE 14 A–M, 15A–D)

1975 Neonesidea manningi sp nov, Maddocks: 53, Figs. 1–3 View FIGURE 1 View FIGURE 2 View FIGURE 3 , Pl. 1, figs. 1–6.

Material: The species was described from a collection of 104 specimens in alcohol ( USNM 142391–142392 About USNM , 142402 About USNM , 142404–142406 About USNM ) .

Dimensions: Maddocks (1975) reported the following dimensions for the male holotype specimen (896M): LVL 0.650 mm, LVH 0.350 mm, RVL 0.650 mm, RVH 0.320 mm .

Supplemental Description: The plate is relatively short and broad, with nearly straight sides, deep scroll-like indentations and a flaring, subpyramidal bracket. The posterior margin carries about 6 broad, bluntly terminated teeth, which are nearly equal in width. A broad gap intervenes between these terminal teeth and the bluntly rounded corner teeth.

Remarks: This is one of the smallest species of the genus. We may speculate that small size facilitates clinging to algae on current-swept, rocky coasts of small, isolated volcanic islands. The species reported as N. tenera from St. Peter and Paul Rocks, Brazil by Antonietto et al. (2012) is similar but larger.

Distribution: Known only from Ascension Island.
