Genus Echinonyssus Hirst, 1925
Note: Despite Domrow's (1963) indication that Hirstionyssus should be considered as a junior synonym of Echinonyssus , most authors have continued to recognize Hirstionyssus as a valid name and the taxonomic status of the two genera has not been resolved. Tenorio and Radovsky (1979) discovered some species of Hirstionyssus with the antero-ventral seta of coxa II hypertrophied into a hook-like structure, apparently homologous to that found in Echinonyssus nasutus Hirst. This led them to reevaluate the status of Echinonyssus and Hirstionyssus and confirmed the idea of Domrow in treating Hirstionyssus as a junior synonym of Echinonyssus , that we also following this opinion and the definition of subfamily and genus. According to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, a family group name based on a type-genus rejected after 1960 as a junior synonym is not to be changed. Thus, Hirstionyssinae continues to be the valid name for the subfamily ( Tenorio and Radovsky 1979).
Echinonyssus butantanensis (Fonseca, 1932)
Distribution and habitats. Province and Region not mentioned, may be on Rattus or Mus species ( Herrin 1974); Chaharmahal va Bakhtiari Province (Shahrekord), on the body of Rattus or Mus species and nest materials of unknown rodents ( Nemati et al. 2012).
Note: Hirstionyssus latiscutatus (de Meillon and Lavoipierre, 1944) was considered as a junior synonym of H. butantanensis (Fonseca, 1932) by Herrin (1974).
