= Grumilea umbellata Miquel (1857: 295) , syn. nov. ≡ Uragoga umbellifera Kuntze (1891: 958) . Type (lectotype, designated here):— INDONESIA. Sumatra: Hochankola, Waldregion 1-3000’, s.dat., F. W. Junghuhn s.n. ( L barcode L 0057612).

= Mussaenda membranacea King & Gamble (1904: 187) , syn. nov. Type (lectotype, designated here):— SINGAPORE. Chan Chu Kang: 1 Jun 1890, J.S. Goodenough 1639 (CAL barcode CAL0000029895). FIGURE 5 .

Scortechini (syntype n.v.); King’s Collector 1886 (syntype n.v.); King’s Collector 4953 (syntype n.v.); King’s Collector 6588 (syntype n.v.); L. Wray 2230 (syntype n.v.). INDONESIA. Sumatra: H. O. Forbes 2823 (syntype BM, CAL, K) .

Notes: —There are two names available that are older than P. ridleyi . But neither Grumilea umbellata Miq. nor Mussaenda membranacea King & Gamble can be directly transferred into Psychotria as the epithets are pre-empted by other species. Similarly, transfer of Kuntze’s Uragoga umbellifera , a replacement name for G. umbellata in Uragoga , is also blocked in Psychotria . Ridley (1923) maintained P. kunstleri as a separate species without seeing any material of it. We have searched BM, CAL, K and SING for original material of P. kunstleri , and the only syntype found is the Forbes collection from Sumatra. This seems to fit within P. ridleyi but we do not lectotypify the name here in case one of the Peninsular Malaysia syntypes does appear.
