Osbornellus afflexus Domínguez & Godoy View in CoL , sp. nov.
( Figs. 28a–28e)
Description. Length: 6.3–7.2 mm. Member of the O. auronitens group ( Figs. 4). Vertex angulate, median length about equal to distance between eyes at posterior margin. General color reddish. Face pale brown. Apex of vertex with a thin, transverse, pale yellow band that extends to ocellus and is bordered on each side by black; sometimes with short straight lines posteriorly. Frequently without band, only reddish brown, sometimes broad, bright red transverse band across median half of vertex, yellow band along the posterior margin. Pronotum and scutellum orange. Anterior wing transparent yellowish, usually with brown spots along costa and commissural line.
Male genitalia: Pygofer less than twice as long as wide, moderately projected posteriorly, apex wide and rounded; macrosetae long, distributed along apical third of pygofer ( Fig. 28a). Valve oval, margins rounded. Plates long, apex pointed, setae plumose ( Fig. 28b). Style with apophysis long and straight ( Fig. 28c). Aedeagus in ventral view wide at base; shaft with apex rounded, one third the length of the ventral processes ( Fig. 28d). Ventral processes arising very close to base, wide and slightly curved distally, convergent apically, apices pointed. In lateral view shaft slender, very curved dorsad (almost semicircular), tip rounded, shorter than ventral process; dorsal projection narrow, pointed, straight. Gonopore subapical. Ventral processes divergent from shaft, longer than shaft, directed dorso-caudad, apices pointed ( Fig. 28e).
Diagnosis. The aedeagus is very similar to O. maesi , but O. afflexus is reddish brown, the vertex is triangular, and the aedeagal shaft in lateral view is almost semicircular. In O. maesi the shaft is only slightly curved and the ventral processes are diverent in lateral view.
Distribution. Known from Costa Rica and Panama; 1100–1800 m.
Etymology. This species is named for the strongly curved aedeagal shaft in lateral view.
