Allophrys View in CoL View at ENA specimens not assigned to species

In addition to the species described here, we have seen an additional 800+ specimens that do not belong to any of these species but we cannot assign them to species yet. There are too few discrete morphological differences in the available specimens to be able to confidently say how many additional species are present. We have seen many specimens belonging to A. divaricata Horstmann but also many similar specimens with minor to significant morphological and colour variation which do not entirely correspond to A. divaricata (see Horstmann 2010, for a diagnosis of A. divaricata ). Another species group comprises specimens with the flagellum with an apical or subapical pale band. This is very variable material that probably includes some barely distinguishable species. These two species groups contain about equivalent numbers of specimens. DNA barcoding would undoubtedly help.
