Genus Hypopta Hübner, 1818 View in CoL
Type species (by monotypy) Hypopta ambigua Hübner, 1818 .
Redescription. Moths of medium size. Antenna equal to 0.5 of fore wing in length, Antenna bipectinate, setae twice longer than antenna rod diameter. Fore wing relatively short, wide, apically semicircular, pattern mottled. Hind wing without pattern.
Male genitalia ( Figs 10−14 View Figures 10−14 ). Uncus long, apically acute; gnathos arms ribbon- like, wide, short; gnathos absent, valve semi-oval, basally at costal edge – large lamellar triangular harpe with serrated lower edge; small blunt harpe with bundle of specific hairs at abdominal edge; uncus semicircular; phallus slightly shorter than valve, apically obliquely cut, vesica without cornuti.
Female genitalia ( Fig. 15 View Figure 15 ). Examined only in H. invetita ( Dognin, 1923) . Papillae anales pillowlike, round; apophyses anteriores slightly longer and significantly thicker than apophyses posteriores; ostium deep-seated, surrounded with cylindrical barrel-like sclerite, ductus short, thin, sclerotized, bursa long, baglike.
Diagnosis. The genus Hypopta is most close to the genera Philanglaus and Laberlia Yakovlev, Naydenov & Penco, 2020 (type species: Langsdorfia bellaria Dognin, 1911 ). All these genera have a harpe in the basal part of the valve, but Hypopta differs from them in a series of characters.
In the genus Philanglaus the harpes are thin, shaped as acute triangles, the adults are larger, the wings have bright mottles pattern.
In the genus Laberlia the harpes are thin, parallel to the uncus, the adults are significantly bigger, the wings are semi-transparent with mottled pattern.
Several species historically recognized as belonging to genus Hypopta , has not being included in the present work. These species continue being revised by the authors. Their taxonomic status remains unclear.
Distribution. South America: Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile.
