Diagnosis. Within the Samuraicus group, this is the only species in the mainland East Palaearctic region. Females are at present indistinguishable from those of Caucasus endemic Q. caucasicus .
Description. Measurements ♂ (n = 5): HW/HL 1.24–1.35; PW/PL 1.08–1.11; EW/EL 1.06–1.12; ESut/PL 0.71–0.79; PW/HW 1.05–1.11; forebody length 4.1– 4.6 mm.
Measurements ♀ (n = 5): HW/HL 1.27–1.32; PW/PL 1.09–1.15; EW/EL 1.08–1.12; ESut/PL 0.75–0.81; PW/HW 1.10–1.12; forebody length 3.6–4.2 mm.
In general, very similar to Q. samuraicus and differing only in the following: antennomeres 1–3 reddish, contrasting with darker, brownish antennomeres 4–11, legs, especially femora, distinctly paler, contrasting with body colour, varying from reddish-brown to light yellow-brown; head less transverse, elytra more transverse, head on average slightly narrower than pronotum than in Q. samuraicus , forebody generally shorter, male sternite IX more slender, with narrower apex, median lobe in ventral view with apex not distinctly acuminate ( Fig. 5f View Fig ), paramere not swollen in lateral view ( Fig. 5g View Fig ), in ventral view, more or less parallel-sided, slender and therefore with lateral margins far from those of median lobe in ventral view ( Fig. 5e View Fig ).
Distribution. Known only from eastern Russia (Amur Province, Buryatiya Republic, Irkutsk Province, Khabarovsk and Primorsk Territories, Sakhalin) and China (Jilin). One specimen was seen from Briansk Province, in western Russia (West Palaearctic) but this specimen was probably mislabelled. Quedionuchus deceptor may also occur in North and South Korea.
Bionomics. This species is primarily found in hardwood or mixed forests under bark of trees in the genera Salix , Ulmus , Alnus , Prunus , Maackia , Tilia , Chosenia , Betula , Populus and Abies . It is frequently associated with fungusy wood and sometimes with various hard bracket fungi and mushrooms on trees. Specimens have been collected from elevations ranging from 100 to 1200 m and during May to October.
Etymology. The species’ epithet is the Latin noun deceptor , - oris, m (a deceiver), referring to its morphological similarity to Q. samuraicus of Japan, with which it was previously confused. Noun in apposition.
