TYPE LOCALITY: "Africa, Asia."
DISTRIBUTION: Europe, originally from S. Sweden south to the Pyrennees Mtns., Balkans, and Caucasus Mts.; now reintroduced to E. Poland, W. Soviet Union, and Caucasus Mtns.
COMMENT: Considered conspecific with bison by some authors; see Corbet, 1978:206; but see also Corbet and Hill, 1980:122. According to Heptner et al., 1961, [Mammals of the Soviet Union], Vyssha Shkola, p. 388, type locality probably Belovezhskaya Pushcha (= Forest), Poland.
