TYPE LOCALITY: " Mexico " (= C. Kansas,"Quivera"); redesignated as Canadian River valley, E. New Mexico ( U.S.A.) .
DISTRIBUTION: Formerly N.W. and C. Canada, south through U.S.A., to Chihuahua, Coahuila ( Mexico).
COMMENT: Exterminated in wild except in Yellowstone Park, Wyoming ( U.S.A.) and Wood Buffalo Park, Northwest Terr. ( Canada). Reintroduced widely within native range; also C. Alaska. See Hershkovitz, 1957, Proc. Biol. Soc. Wash., 79:31-32 for discussion of " Mexico " type locality. See MacDonald, 1981, North American Bison , their classification and evolution, Univ. California Press, Berkeley, p. 62 for redesignation of type locality.
PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix I and U.S. ESA - Endangered as B. b. athabascae subspecies only.
