TYPE LOCALITY: South Africa, Cape of Good Hope .
DISTRIBUTION: Gambia, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, and Nigeria to Sudan; Angola to S. Africa; thence north through Botswana, S. Zaire, Malawi, Zambia, and Tanzania to S.E. Sudan and S.W. Ethiopia; west to Senegal.
COMMENT: Includes derbianus ; see Van Gelder, 1977, Lammergeyer, 23:1-6. PG believes derbianus is a valid species. Formerly included in Taurotragus ; see Ansell, 1978:53; but also see Swanepoel et al., 1980:187.
PROTECTED STATUS: U.S. ESA - Endangered as Taurotragus derbianus derbianus subspecies only.
