Coluber umbratus Daudin, 1803: 144 ; based on Russell (1801 [in 1801–1809]: 5, pl. 3, “Doublee”).—Type locality. “Bengale”.—Onomatophore. Holotype: specimen depicted in pl. 3 of Russell (1801 [in 1801–1809]).
Status. A taxon here regarded as a subjective synonym of Xenochrophis piscator . Synonymized with Tropidonotus quincunciatus (as Var. E) by Günther (1858: 66).
Comments. Daudin (1803) gave the type locality as “Bengale”, although Russell did not cite any locality for his Doublee. Russell’s plate makes clear that the depicted specimen is a typically patterned X. piscator as defined here. This taxon was recognized as valid by Schlegel (1837). The status of holotype of Coluber umbratus and of others depicted by Russell not mentioned here is planned to be discussed elsewhere.
