Panstrongylus rufotuberculatus (Champion) View in CoL
( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 6 – 9 )
Lamus rufotuberculatus Champion 1899 , p. 210, pl. 12, figs. 27, 27a. Type locality: Panama, Bugaba.
Diagnosis. Adults body length 25–30mm. Body ground color dark brown to black with numerous reddish to yellow markings at various sites. Head black except a reddish line extending dorsally and medially. Antenniferous tubercles close to anterior margin of eyes. First and second rostral segments dark reddish, first with short, sparse setae, second and third with numerous long hairs. Scutellum black, posterior process apically or entirely red. Hemelytra extending to apex of abdomen in both sexes, color brown, tinged with pale green. Legs stout, femora dorsally with longitudinal red stripes of varied extension. Connexivum with light portions orange or yellow. Each connexival segment with subrectangular dark spot at center, adjoining outer margin of segment ( Lent & Wygodzinsky 1979).
Distribution. Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico (Campeche, Chiapas and Veracruz), Panama, Peru, and Venezuela ( Lent & Wygodzinsky 1979, Zárate & Zárate 1985, Patterson et al. 2009, Salazar-Schettino et al. 2010).
Records in Veracruz. Municipality of Catemaco (Las Margaritas), Municipality of San Andrés Tuxtla (Estación de Biología Tropical “Los Tuxtlas”).
Comments. This sylvatic species rarely colonize the peri- and intradomiciliary habitats, mainly associated with armadillos and bats ( Patterson et al. 2009). In spite of its wide distribution from South America to Mexico ( Patterson et al. 2009, Lent & Wygodzinsky 1979), this species had been collected rarely in Mexico with the use of light traps in the states of Chiapas and Veracruz. In Veracruz it was sporadically collected in the 1970s to 1990s years ( Zárate & Zárate 1985, Cruz-Reyes 1990), but never has showed a high abundance. In the Andean countries, P. rufotuberculatus shows a strong tendency to colonize human dwellings and is an important vector of T. cruzi to humans (Dujardin et al. 1998, Wolff & Castillo 2002, Traviezo-Valles et al. 2008, Patterson et al. 2009).
