Description. Male. Body length 6.6 mm (n = 8).

Head. Frons narrow, 0.0 58 (0.044–0.069/8) of head width at narrowest ( Fig. 20 View FIGURE 20 A). Frontal vitta narrow, at narrowest point nearly the same width as anterior ocellus, mostly black with a small basal reddish portion; frons gradually widening at lunule. Fronto-orbital plate and parafacial orange, with silver microtomentum. Gena yellow with silver microtomentum, with a seta at median region, subvibrissa approximately half vibrissa length; postgena black, with white microtomentum and thin, long, yellow and black hairs. Occiput black, with white microtomentum and thin, long, black and yellow hairs. Face and clypeal membrane orange, with silver microtomentum. Ocellar triangle black, elongated. Scape, pedicel and first flagellomere orange; palp orange. Chaetotaxy: two pairs of proclinate and parallel ocellar setae; one pair of parallel post-ocellar setae; one pair of proclinate and long outer vertical setae, of the same length as post-ocellar setae; inner vertical setae crossed; one pair of convergent paravertical setae; uppermost postocular setae thin, orange then black, arranged in narrow lines and homogeneously distributed up to gena; inter-frontal setae and orbital setae absent; 10–12 frontal setae, longer at base; facial carina slightly prominent with few short black setulae at base above vibrissa; vibrissae crossed; subvibrissal setae approximately 2/3 the length of vibrissa.

Thorax. Mesonotum black, with thin white microtomentum and with no defined bands; pleura and humeral callus, anterior and posterior spiracles, and pleura black ( Fig. 20 View FIGURE 20 B). Chaetotaxy: humerals, 3; post-humerals, 2; acrostichals, 2:1; dorsocentrals, 2:3; supra-alars, 3; presuturals, 1; postalars, 3 (middle one longer and thicker); prebasal scutellar, 1 (slender); basal scutellars, 1; subapical scutellars, 1 (slender); apical scutellars, 1; discal scutellars, 1; proepimerals, 2; anepisternals, 7–8; katepisternals, 2+1; merals as an inverted “L”; post-alar wall with few black setulae; suprasquamal bridge with sparse fine hairs. Legs: black; mid femur with 3 apical posterodorsal setae and 1 antero-medial seta. Wing: membrane slightly infuscate at base on costal, subcostal, r1, r2+3, br, bm, and cup cells and around crossvein r-m; rest of membrane hyaline; tegula and basicosta dark chestnut; subcostal sclerite and stem vein bare; junction of veins R2+3 and R4+5 with 3–5 setulae; distance between apices of veins M and R4+5 much less than half the distance between apices of R2+3 and R4+5;upper calypter hyaline, with a black edge; lower calypter with a lobular inner margin, not directed towards the scutellum.

Abdomen. Completely black, with a light purple reflection and fine microtomentum distributed homogeneously. Syntergite 1+2 without lateral discal setae parallel to margin of syntergite; syntergite 1+2 and T3 with marginal lateral setae; T4 with basal setae; T5 with abundant, slender and long discal and basal setae. Terminalia: ST5 with oval lobes ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 5 – 11 ); T6 short and separated from syntergosternite 7+8 ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 5 – 11 ); apex of paraphallus with denticles; epiphallus long ( Figs 7–8 View FIGURES 5 – 11 ); epandrium subquadrate, with very long hairs; in lateral view, cercus straight and surstylus slightly sinuous ( Figs 9–10 View FIGURES 5 – 11 ); postgonite arched, pregonite with truncated apices, with three apical setae ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 5 – 11 ).

Female. As male except as follows: body length 6.9 mm (n = 15); frons 0.238 (0.228–0.250/10) of head width at narrowest ( Fig. 20 View FIGURE 20 C); frontal vitta wide, middle basal portion near lunule reddish chestnut, the rest black; chaetotaxy: 1 pair of crossed interfrontal setae; 2 proclinate upper orbital setae; post-ocular setae black all the way to gena. Terminalia: T7 continuous; T8 continuous, located dorsally, with many setae on surface.

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the general dark color of the species.

Distribution. Known only from Colombia, from the Central Cordillera of the northern Andean region in the Departments of Antioquia, Caldas, Quindío and Risaralda; from the Oriental Cordillera in the Departments of Norte de Santander and Santander.

Remarks. Huascaromusca obscura sp. nov. (referred to as “ Huascaromusca sp. 1” in Marinho et al. 2016) is similar to H. uniseta in the dark coloration of the thorax and in the number of both acrostichal and dorsocentral setae (2:1 and 2:3, respectively). However, H. obscura differs by possessing an entirely dark body, including the legs and both the anterior and posterior spiracles, whereas H. uniseta has lighter spiracles. In H. obscura there are denticles at the tip of the paraphallus (absent in H. uniseta ), the suprasquamal ridge has sparse fine hairs and T5 has slender, elongated discal setae, whereas in H. uniseta the suprasquamal ridge is bare and T5 has strong discal setae
