Atypus sacculatus View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs 68–79 View FIGURES 68–79 )

Type material. Holotype male, CHINA: Yunnan Province, Yingjiang County, 24°36’N, 97°54’E, Yingxi Village, 10 August 1999, J. Y. Zhang leg. ( MHBU); paratypes: 10 females and 5 juvenile females, Yunnan Province, Lianghe County , 24°48’N, 98°12’E, 20 January 2000, K. F. Xu leg. ( MHBU). GoogleMaps

Diagnosis. Females of A. sacculatus sp. nov. resemble those of A. baotianmanensis in the shape of their receptacula, but differ in having a shorter atrium, with very small receptacula close to the lateral margins of the genital atrium, with basal stalks of the median pair of receptacula almost 2.5 times as long as the diameter of the receptacula ( Figs 71–74 View FIGURES 68–79 ); males have a shorter lower distal corner of conductor, with a notch on the folded part of the upper distal corner of the conductor ( Figs 78–79 View FIGURES 68–79 ); in both sexes the first pair of sigilla are remote from the anterior sternal margin ( Figs 70, 76 View FIGURES 68–79 ).

Etymology. The specific name is taken from the Latin adjective “sacculatus” (= with small sacs) and refers to the small receptacula.

Description.

Male (holotype). Total length (including chelicerae) 14.76. Carapace 5.13 long, 4.59 wide; abdomen 6.12 long, 3.69 wide. Carapace black brown, with great number of black lines. Eye tubercle black. Eye region occupying nearly onethird of width of pars cephalica. Two eye rows recurved, posterior eye row slightly wider than anterior one. Eye diameters: AME 0.30, ALE 0.28, PME 0.20, PLE 0.23. Distances AME–AME 0.28, AME–ALE 0.08, PME–PME 0.83, PME–PLE 0.00. MOA 0.53 long, front width 0.88, back width 1.13. Fovea transverse, deep and narrow, occupying about 3/20 of carapace width at that point. Chelicerae black brown, with 14 teeth on promargin and granular texture on pro and retrolateral faces. Anterior lobe of pedipalp coxa dark red brown, inner margin with one irregular row of cuspules. Sternum dark red brown, with black border, 3.42 long and 3.24 wide. First and second pairs of sigilla almost equal in size, first pair of sigilla remote anterior sternal margin posterior pair pearshaped.

Abdomen black brown, with dorsal scutum purple black brown. ALS 0.53 long, PMS 0.58 long, PLS 2.71 long (basal joint 0.63, median 0.70, subapical 0.75, apical 0.63).

Palpal femur with furrow. Legs red brown. Granular texture only on femur I. Metatarsus IV with one dorsal spine distally. Leg formula: 4123.

Male palp ( Figs 77–79 View FIGURES 68–79 ): conductor and its lower distal corner short, upper distal corner small, folded downwards and with notch on folded part.

Female. Total length (including chelicerae) 17.37. Carapace 5.40 long, 4.86 wide; abdomen 8.37 long, 6.30 wide. Carapace shape as in male. Eye region black, occupying nearly onethird of width of pars cephalica. Both eye rows recurved, posterior eye row slightly wider than anterior one. Eye diameters: AME 0.25, ALE 0.25, PME 0.23, PLE 0.23. Distances AME–AME 0.25, AME–ALE 0.10, PME–PME 0.80, PME–PLE 0.00. MOA 0.55 long, front width 0.75, back width 1.13. Fovea as in male, occupying about 3/ 20 of carapace width at that point. Chelicerae dark red brown, with 14 teeth on promargin. Anterior lobe of pedipalp coxa red brown, with many cuspules at inner margin and inner half of ventral side. Sternum wider than long, yellow brown, with black border, posterior pair of sigilla rounded.

Abdomen dark red brown, dorsal tergite orange. ALS 0.58 long, PMS 0.58 long, PLS 3.36 long (basal joint 0.73, median 1.00, subapical 0.88, apical 0.75). Legs reddish brown. Metatarsus IV with eight dorsal spines. Leg formula: 1423.

Vulva ( Figs 71–74 View FIGURES 68–79 ): atrium short, much wider than long, pore patches small, median pair of receptacula small and close to lateral pair, basal stalks of median receptacula almost 2.5 times as long as long diameter of receptacula.

Variation. Size range of mature females: carapace length 5.40–5.67, width 4.86–5.12, total length 17.37–17.55, n=10.

Habitat. Found in pursewebs attached to the bases of China fir trees.

Distribution. China: Yunnan

Remarks. Although male and female specimens were not collected from the same locality, they are considered conspecific because in both sexes the first pair of sigilla are remote from the anterior sternal margin, the arrangements of cheliceral teeth are similar, and the carapace has many small black lines. The collecting localities are actually close to each other.
