Nomenclatural notes on the lecto- and epitypes of the name Kitchingia campanulata View in CoL :— Baker (1881: 264) clearly stated that the “[…] 28 new flowering plants […]” he wished to describe, as well as “[…] a few of the most interesting of those already known […]” he wished to record, were part of a collection made in Madagascar in 1879 by Langley Kitching of Leeds, United Kingdom. In terms of the location(s) in Madagascar from which the material originated, he noted that the principal districts in which the plants were collected are the northern and eastern slopes of the mountains of Ankaratra, the highest range on the island, situated some 30 miles [~ 50 km] southwest of the capital, Antananarivo. He further recorded that the “[…] Betsileo country occupies the central mountainrange between the 21 st and 22 nd parallels of latitude […]”.

The specimen K000232825 [https://data.kew.org/images/image/details?imageId=d8272b66-bede-488a-a9d1-9558e9189bb9] held at Herb. K carries a printed label stating: “ MADAGASCAR. LANGLEY KITCHING. Comm. May 1880 ”, to which has been added in ink “New genus”, “Betsileo-land”, and “ Kitchingia campanulata ”, along with a reference to the protologue of the name, and this is the lectotype of the name Kitchingia campanulata . It consists of an inflorescence, and leaf and flower fragments contained in a paper capsule.

However, the specimen B. du Puy & D. du Puy MB 341 (Herb. K barcode K000384012 ) is a considerably more complete specimen and, unlike the lectotype, consists of leaves, a stem section, and an inflorescence. This specimen is here designated as epitype. Furthermore, an isoepitype exists at Herb. P (barcode P00064484 !; available for examination online at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/ p/p00064484) .

Taxonomic notes:— Kalanchoe campanulata is an accepted species (see Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau 1995: 54–58, Descoings 2003: 157).

Kalanchoe campanulata is included in Kalanchoe subg. Pubescentes .
