The unique male holotype of M. caseyi View in CoL , 9 mm long by 3.5 mm wide ( Figs. 3, 4 View FIGURES 1–4. 1–3 ), is labeled as follows: “California [h] // TYPUS [red, p, framed] // Melanophila caseyi View in CoL m. Type [h], Det. D r. Obenberger [p] // Mus. Nat. Pragae Inv. 22080 [p, orange, number handwritten] // Phaenops arcuata (Fall) View in CoL [h], Typus comparandus A. Cobos det. 1984 [p]". Cobos did not publish this. Nelson et al. (1996) synonymized P. arcuata View in CoL with P. lecontei View in CoL . Having found no
significant differences between both species we consider P. caseyi ( Obenberger 1944) also to be conspecific with P. lecontei ( Obenberger 1928) and a junior synonym.
