Phaenops fulvoguttata ( Harris, 1829) View in CoL
( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1–4. 1–3 )
Buprestis fulvoguttata Harris, 1829: 2 View in CoL .
Melanophila horni Obenberger, 1944: 319 View in CoL . syn. nov.
We have examined what we consider to be the holotype of M. horni View in CoL ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1–4. 1–3 ), which Obenberger described from a female measured as 9 mm long by 3.5 mm wide, labeled as follows: “Buffalo. N.Y. [h] // TYPUS [p, red framed] // Melanophila horni View in CoL m. Type [h] Det. D r. Obenberger [p] // Mus. Nat. Pragae inv. 22079 [p, orange, number handwritten] // Melanophila fulvoguttata (Harris) [h] A. Cobos det. 1982 [p]". We agree with Cobos’ determination (although he never published on this species); clearly P. horni ( Obenberger 1944) View in CoL is conspecific with P. fulvoguttata ( Harris 1829) and is a junior synonym. The only other specimen is the one Obenberger (1944) placed in a key as “Elytris immaculatis”, also in the Prague Museum, labelled: “Buffalo. N.Y. [h] // TYPUS [p, red framed] // M. horni View in CoL ab. imaculatella m. Type [h], Det. D r. Obenberger [p]", and it represents an unavailable name ( Bellamy 2008b). We based this decision on our interpretation of Articles 72.4 and 73.1.2 of the ICZN (1999).
