Examined type specimens

Holotype. 3 China, Yunnan, Yulongshan mts., Baishui , 2900–3500 m, 27°08′ N, 100°14′ E, 7−12 July 1990, Vit Kubán leg.

Paratypes. 3♀♀, same data as holotype (all in NHMB) .

Remarks

This species was described and illustrated by Wittmer (1993), and later he (1997a) suggested some descriptions in variation of body color; he also provided another illustration of aedeagus.

In this study, we examined the types and all other specimens determined by Wittmer in the cantharid collection of NHMB. As a result, we discovered that the variations described by Wittmer (1997a) beyond the definition of M. yunnanus ( Wittmer, 1993) , in other words, they are not the same species. Actually, this difference showed clearly in the illustration of aedeagus, which was provided by Wittmer (1993: fig. 15; 1997a: fig. 191). Although the former was illustrated in the loose state, while the latter was dried, the ventral processes of each paramere are different.

Consequently, here it should be noted that the definition of M. yunnanus will follow that by Wittmer (1993), while the variation described and illustrated by Wittmer (1997a) should belong to a new species above, M. variablis sp. nov.
