TYPE SPECIES: Sciurus gambianus Ogilby, 1835 as designated by Opinion 464 of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (1957d) in which Sciurus annulatus Desmarest, 1822 was suppressed.

COMMENTS: Tribe Protoxerini ( Moore, 1959) . Includes Aethosciurus ruwenzorii . Reviewed in part by Grubb (1982b).
