Other Brachysira Taxa

Rarely occurring species

B. serians and B. zellensis ( Figs 42–43 View FIGURES 34–43 ) were encountered only as isolated valves in two and three lake samples respectively, in the west of the country. B. styriaca ( Figs 34–41 View FIGURES 34–43 ) and B. liliana ( Figs 44–51 View FIGURES 44–51 ) were also uncommon, reaching a slightly higher maximum abundance (1.2% & 1.4%), but also occur infrequently in western lakes. B. liliana was restricted to calcareous lakes and often found in association with B. neglectissima (see below). The morphology and ecology of the small number of valves encountered for these less common taxa conform to that given for the type description and in published accounts elsewhere.
