Olethrius brevicornis Dillon et Dillon, 1952: 7 . TL: Fiji Island. Holotype in BISHOP (not examined). Synonymised by Vitali 2008.

Olethrius torresianus Hayashi, 1960: 1 . TL: Vanuatu Island. Holotype in OMNH (not examined). Synonymised by Vitali 2008.

Olethrius scabripennis (Thomson) : Dillon and Dillon, 1952: 7, misidentified.

Stenodontes (Olethrius) tyrannus (Thomson) : Lameere 1903b.

Olethrius tyranus (Thomson) : Hayashi 1961, misspelling.

Diagnosis. O. tyrannus tyrannus can be recognised by the elytra surface with fine sparse punctures entirely, bearing short recumbent fine yellowish white pubescence.

Type. Olethrius tyrannus Thomson , Lectotype male in MNHN, with the following labels “ Olethrius Thoms. E. 316 | tyrannus Thoms. Type, N. iles Hebrides | Museum Paris Coll. J. Thomson 1952 | Th. TYPE”.

Material examined. Vanuatu: ANIC (1 ♂): S. Bule, Efate, Jul. 2004 ; OAI (1 ♂): Banks Island , 1914, Allen. Locality?: OAI (1 ♀): “Port Sunlight, Lever Bros, 4.5.09/ ex W.W. Froggatt Collection ” .

Remarks. The specimen from OAI from the W. Froggatt collection bears labels similar to the specimens of O. t. salomonum collected from the Lever Bros plantations in the Solomon Islands but that locality does not agree with its known distribution and is here treated as doubtful.
