Ilex subrotunda Doweld , sp. nov.

Ilex ohashii Huzioka (1963: 208) , nom. inval. (Art. 40.1 of the ICN).

Type:—[fossil leaves] Yamakayakusa, Ani-machi, Kita-Akita-gun Akita Prefecture, Japan (holotype, AKMG-3132, Institute of Applied Geology, Mining College, Akita University, Akita, Japan-illustrated by Huzioka 1963: pl. 35, fig. 10).

Description:—Leaves elliptical, 4.5–5 cm long, 1.9–2.5 cm wide, acute at both basis and apex, entire, long-petiolate (6 mm long); venation of 7 pairs of secondary veinlets leave the midrib at angles of 45–40, camptodrome, tertiary venation reticulate or percurrent in the inter-secondary spaces (after Huzioka 1963, modified).

Occurrence:—Middle Miocene (Utto Formation); Eurasia (Japanese Archipelago).

Eponymy:—Similar to extant Ilex rotunda Thunberg (in Murray 1784: 168).

IFPNI:— 9DFB6C2F-7C4D-0AAB-DDD6-71C69F0A13C4.

Notes:—The fossil-species Ilex ohashii Huzioka (1963: 208) was not validly published since the type was not designated (Art. 40.1 of the ICN) [two specimens from two locations were incorrectly cited as “ holotypes ”]. Huzioka (1963) related it to extant Ilex rotunda Thunberg , therefore, a new name is proposed to replace invalid I. ohashii .
