7. Cassia mutisiana Kunth, Mimoses View in CoL 142, pl. 43. 1824.
Type :— COLOMBIA. Nova Granada, Mutis s.n (holotype: B†, propably destroyed, photo negative F-1713 [image!]; lectotype designated here: P barcode P00679251 [image!]; isolectotype: P barcode P00798386 [image!]). Lectotype available at: http://mediaphoto.mnhn. fr/media/14448637526653aeQ2towMgxVHqKU
Accepted name. Senna mutisiana (Kunth) H.S. Irwin & Barneby (1982: 512) .
Notes. The Kunth collection was acquired by the Berlin Herbarium (B) in about 1830, when he took over as deputy director of the Berlin Botanical Garden. The collection included approximately 70,000 specimens and 3,000 types ( Hiepko 1987). The holotype of Cassia mutisiana was deposited at B, and was probably destroyed during World War II. It is available, however, in the negatives collection of the Field Museum (F) under number F-1713, and clearly shows clearly the “Typus” indication. Our searches found three additional specimens of the collection Mutis s.n., two at the Paris Herbarium (P), and one at the Smithsonian Herbarium ( US). After analyzing the specimens, we observed that those at P have determination on their labels in Kunth’s handwriting. The specimens of Cassia mutisiana from the Humbold and Bompland Herbarium are now deposited at P; they are well preserved and we are designating here the specimen under barcode P00679251 as the lectotype. That specimen is complete, with leaves, flowers and fruits (unlike the specimen under barcode P00798386, which has only fruits). The specimen deposited at US belongs to the collection Mutis 4214 (under barcode 00001491) but does not have Kunth’s handwriting, and probably belongs to another collection.
