Diagnosis. Coloration. Dorsum usually unicolor, brown, reddish brown or dark reddish brown; antennomeres 1–6 and 8 brown; antennomeres 7, 9, 10, and basal 3/5 of antennomere 11 dark brown; apical 2/5 of antennomere 11 light brown.
Body 3.2–5.0 mm long, ca. 1.8× as long as wide ( Fig. 77A View Fig ); head densely and minutely punctate, bearing some large punctures ( Fig. 77A View Fig ); antennomeres 1–4 each longer than wide; antennomeres 5 and 11 each about as long as wide; remaining antennomeres each wider than long; antennomere 11 oval ( Fig. 77C View Fig ). Pronotum very feebly sinuate at posterior margin and densely and minutely punctate ( Fig. 77A View Fig ). Elytra not transversely strigose; each elytron with nine rows of punctures, bearing small number of large punctures and dense very fine punctures between rows ( Fig. 77D View Fig ); row 9 invisible in dorsal view, subhumeral row as long as ca. 1/3 or 1/4 of elytral length ( Fig. 77B View Fig ); rows composed of relatively weak punctures ( Fig. 77A View Fig ); sutural stria fine, reaching from apex to ca. apical half of the elytral length. Metathoracic wings fully developed. Mesoventrite with one distinct excavation between median carina and transverse carina ( Fig. 77E View Fig ); median carina of mesoventrite low ( Fig. 77E View Fig ); metaventrite indistinctly sexually dimorphic. Legs showing sexual dimorphism on protarsi, protibiae, mesotarsi, metafemora, and metatibiae; metafemur with a small dorsal projection posteroapically ( Figs. 78G, 78H View Fig ).
Male. Metaventrite usually bearing relatively thick and dense pubescence at middle portion ( Fig. 77F View Fig ); tarsomeres 2–4 of protarsi and mesotarsi expanded ( Fig. 78A View Fig ); protibiae gradually and relatively distinctly widening from base towards apex at internal margins ( Fig. 78E View Fig ); metafemora characteristic and very sharply protuberant at about basal 1/4 of posterior margins ( Fig. 78C View Fig ); metatibiae relatively slender, weakly curved inwards ( Fig. 78C View Fig ); abdominal sternite 8 strongly curved ( Fig. 79C View Fig ); aedeagus as shown in Figs. 79A, 79B View Fig .
Female. Metaventrite usually bearing relatively thin and sparse pubescence at middle portion ( Fig. 77G View Fig ); protarsi and mesotarsi slender ( Figs. 78B View Fig ); protibiae gradually and feebly widening from base towards apex at internal margins ( Fig. 78F View Fig ); metafemora very feebly curved at posterior margins ( Fig. 78D View Fig ); metatibiae relatively robust and almost straight ( Fig. 78D View Fig ); abdominal sternite 8 with spiculum ventrale at central point of anterior margin ( Fig. 79D View Fig ); coxites and stylus as shown in Fig. 79E View Fig .
Differential diagnosis. Leiodes lucens is similar to L. irregularis in the long-oval body shape, but can be distinguished from the latter by having an almost unicolor dorsum and the mesoventrite with a distinct excavation ( Fig. 77E View Fig ). In contrast, L. irregularis usually has a bicolored dorsum ( Figs. 93 View Fig D–G) and the mesoventrite without distinct excavation ( Fig. 93J View Fig ).
Taxonomic note. I compared the European specimens of L. lucens with the Korean species L. cooteri Park & Ahn, 2007 and the Japanese species L. alpicola Nakane, 1963 and found that the latter species cannot be distinguished from the former by any morphological character. Males of L. cooteri and L. alpicola are unique in two characters, the male metafemur with a posterior projection ( Fig. 78C View Fig ) and the large trident sclerite of the inner sac of the aedeagus ( Fig. 79A View Fig ) in both these characters, they completely agree with the specimens of L. lucens . Therefore, it is concluded that L. cooteri and L. alpicola are junior synonyms of L. lucens .
Distribution. Europe, Russia, Nepal, China, Korea ( DAFFNER 1983, ANGELINI & ŠVEC 1994, PARK & AHN 2007), and Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, Hokkaido).
