• Small, tailless, hamsterlike, herbivorous lagomorphs with two pairs of incisors (one behind the other), large rounded ears, and soft fur.

• Semi-desert, steppe, meadows, and forest in mountains, from elevations as low as 100 m to alpine zones at 5700 m. •
• 1 genus, 29 species, 62 extant taxa.
