Amphiscirpus tertiarius (Dorofeev) Doweld , comb. nov.

Scirpus tertiarius Dorofeev (1963: 121 , pl. 14, figs. 2–5) ≡ Scirpus longispermus Dorofeev ex Nikitin (2007: 153 , pl. 19, figs. 12–16),

isonym. Type (lectotype designated by Nikitin 2007: 153):—Dorofeev coll. 14/5-K522 (Komarov Botanical Institute, Russian Academy of

Sciences. St.- Petersburg, Russian Federation)—figured by Dorofeev 1963: pl. 14, fig. 5. Geography:—Lezhanka village, right bank of Irtysh river, Omsk region, Russian Federation. Stratigraphy:—Miocene. Fossil status:—Fruits. IFPNI registration record:— 9B5AD826-3F36-45D2-B18C-7F93C54FF013.

Note:—The fossil-species is compared with extant A. nevadensis (Watson) Oteng-Yeboah.

Nikitin (2007) did not accept the validity of Dorofeev’s species name, and ‘validated’ ‘ Scirpus tertiarius Dorofeev ex Nikitin sp. nov. ’ (2007: 153). In 1963 Dorofeev really fulfilled all requirements of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, and provided description (in Russian), illustrations and type designation as ‘ Holotype from the Miocene sediments of Lezhanka village on Irtysh river’ [translated]. Dorofeev in fact did not specify the holotype among several figured specimens (pl. 14, figs. 2–5), but this was permissible in that times; he did not infringe the provisions of the previous and modern versions of the Codes. The obligatory specification of the holotype among figured specimens became effected from 1 January, 2001 (ICN, Art. 43.3). Thus, in fact, Nikitin (2007) designated lectotype from the specimens of Dorofeev (1963), his ‘ Scirpus tertiarius Dorofeev ex Nikitin sp. nov. ’ (2007: 153) should be treated as a superfluous isonym.
