Trachelissa maculicollis View in CoL var. rufiventris ; Aurivillius, 1912: 449.

Male. Head brownish red with black band on vertex and black spots behind eyes. Scape and pedicel black; antennomeres III–XI bicolored, basal 2/3 brownish orange and apex black. Pronotum brownish red, with six rounded black spots, forming two groups separated by a median longitudinal black band; sides of prothorax with two pairs of rounded black spots. Ventral region generally dark brown. Elytra yellowish with elongate dark-brown spots. Coxae dark brown; pedunculus of femora brownish orange and club dark brown; tibiae brownish orange except for dark-brown bases; tarsi brownish orange.

Frons with yellowish setae. Vertex with fine dense punctures; short dense yellowish setae. Antennal tubercle with smooth and glabrous apices. Dorsal region of head with fine sparse punctures. Upper eye lobes well separated, distance between them about three times width of upper lobe; lower eye lobes about three times wider than upper lobes. Genae measuring half diameter of lower eye lobes; short sparse yellowish setae.

Antennae reaching elytra apices at antennomere VIII. Pedicel and antennomeres III–XII with fine shallow dense punctures; short dense yellowish setae; apices of antennomeres III–XI smooth and glabrous; antennomere III with longitudinal groove; antennomere IV with longitudinal groove, not evident at base; apical antennomeres filiform; antennomere III about twice length of scape and 1/5 longer than IV; antennomeres IV–VI subequal in length; antennomeres VII–XI gradually decreasing in length; antennomere XII half length of III and about half length of XI.

Prothorax with shiny surface; prothorax rounded at sides, with two pairs of shallow tubercles, one pair antemedian and the other postmedian; pronotum with two black, rounded tubercles near posterior margin. Pronotum ( Fig. 114 View FIGURES 114 – 121 ) with coarse dense sexually dimorphic punctation, except in a median smooth longitudinal band and two elevations at sides of prothorax, which bear only fine sparse punctures and short sparse setae. Sexual punctation with deeper, rounded, somewhat irregular punctures ( Fig. 115 View FIGURES 114 – 121 ); each indentation with three to nine groups of pores distributed entirely within indentations ( Fig. 116 View FIGURES 114 – 121 ); between indentations are chaetigerous punctures ( Fig. 117 View FIGURES 114 – 121 ). Prosternum with sexual punctures denser than on pronotum; micropunctures present between punctures, with long setae. Anterior margin of prosternun with yellowish setae. Prosternal process expanding to apex and is rounded. Mesosternum depressed. Scutellum glabrous.

Elytra with very fine, sparse and somewhat evident punctures; glabrous; without elevations; apices slightly truncate.

Terminalia: Sternite VIII ( Fig. 77 View FIGURES 77 – 86 ) with apical margin sinuous, lateral margin rounded; sternal apophysis short, with about half greatest length of sternite. Tergite VIII ( Fig. 78 View FIGURES 77 – 86 ) with apical margin slightly sinuous and adorned with long and short setae. Ventral arc ( Fig. 79 View FIGURES 77 – 86 ) with apophysis length subequal to arms. Dorsal arc ( Fig. 80 View FIGURES 77 – 86 ) with apical margin rounded. Tegmen ( Figs 81–83 View FIGURES 77 – 86 ) 2/7 shorter than median lobe; ring piece ovate. Median lobe ( Figs 84–86 View FIGURES 77 – 86 ): dorsal lobe shorter than ventral lobe, with rounded apex; ventral lobe with attenuate apex; basal apophysis 2/5 length of apical portion. Internal sac with two sclerotized “C”-shaped pieces.

Female. Head brownish yellow with black spot on vertex. Antennae brownish red. Pronotum brownish red with six rounded black spots, forming two groups separated by a median black spot. Elytra black, with anterior half yellowish.

Upper eye lobes well separated, distance between them about three times width of upper lobe. Antennae reaching elytra apices at antennomere X or XI; antennomeres distinctly serrate; antennomeres III–VII with smooth and glabrous apices; antennomeres IV–VI subequal in length; VII–X gradually shorter; antennomere XI half length of III and subequal to X in length. Pronotum and sides of prothorax with smooth and glabrous surface; prosternal process with apical margin varying from rounded to slightly truncate, with long yellowish setae. Sternite V with apical margin truncate.

Terminalia: Sternite VIII ( Fig. 118 View FIGURES 114 – 121 ) about 3.5 times wider than long; sternal apophysis about three times longer than sternite; lateral margin with long sparse setae; intermediate region between brush and apophysis with very short setae with rounded apices ( Fig. 119 View FIGURES 114 – 121 ), moderately dense. Ovipositor ( Figs 88, 89 View FIGURES 87 – 89 ) with large vulva; spermathecal gland cylindrical, longer than spermatheca.

Variability. Head and prothorax brownish orange with brownish-red to dark-brown spots. Antennae brownish orange to dark brown. Elytra brownish orange with yellowish lines that may be continuous or form groups ( Figs 141–146 View FIGURES 141 – 146. 141 – 145 ). Females vary from almost entirely yellow to almost entirely black ( Figs 147–152 View FIGURES 147 – 152 ).

Measurements (mm). male/female n= 21/24. Total length 9.1–13.6/8.5–12.7; prothorax length 1.8–2.7/ 1.7–2.5; greatest prothorax width 1.9-3-1.6-2.7; elytral length 6.2–8.7/5.8–8.6; humeral width 2.4–3.5/2.2–3.5.

Type material. We examined the female holotype from South America, deposited in the BMNH.

Comments. See comments on Trachelissa pustulata .

Geographical distribution. The species is reported for Brazil (Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Espírito Santo to Rio Grande do Sul), Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay ( Monné, M.A., 2005) ( Fig. 157 View FIGURE 157 , 161 View FIGURES 158 – 161 ).

Biological data. Baucke (1955) cited Acacia sp. ( Mimosaceae ), Prunus persica (L.) Batsch ( Rosaceae ), and Eugenia uniflora L. ( Myrtaceae ) as hosts. Di Iorio (1997) reported Solanum glaucophyllum Desf. (Solanaceae) . Monné, M.A. (2005) indicated Acacia decurrens Willd. , Mimosa uruguensis Hook & Arn. (Mimosaceae) , and Prunus domestica L ( Rosaceae ) as host plants. We add Anadenanthera sp. ( Fabaceae ) as a new host plant for the species.
