Etymology.—The name is a combination of rubr – ( L. ruber , red) and –costa (L. costa, rib, side) in reference to the reddish coloration of the fore wing costal margin.
Description
Body dark ochraceous, marked with piceous, fore wing costal margin red.
Head
Head not as wide as mesonotum, ground color with incomplete transverse piceous fascia between eyes including anterior and medial lateral ocelli, piceous fascia between medial angle of eye and posterior midline, incomplete at posterior cranial depression in one paratype, fasciae reduced to lateral vertex in one paratype, margin of supraantennal plate piceous along postclypeus. Ocelli ochraceous, surrounded by rosaceous in some paratypes, eyes castaneous. Sparse, long silvery pile posterior to eye. Gena ground color, lorum tawny with ground color posterior, lorum and gena covered with short silvery pile. Postclypeus ground color with incomplete transverse piceous fascia on dorsum, two fasciae in one paratype, and piceous mark at lateral junction with anterior supra-antennal plate, central sulcus on ventral surface extending around apex but not on dorsal surface, nine transverse grooves. Anteclypeus ground color with longitudinal tawny fascia near lateral margin, reduced in some paratypes, small light tawny spot on middle carina, covered with short silvery pile. Mentum ochraceous, labium ochraceous with lateral castaneous fascia proximally and castaneous tip, tip radiating ling silvery pile, reaching to anterior hind coxae. Scape and pedicel ground color marked with castaneous, remaining segments ground color with castaneous distal segment, castaneous reduced in some paratypes.
Thorax
Pronotum ground color, piceous fascia on disc between paramedian and lateral fissures, fascia along mediolateral paramedian fissure and lateral to posterior lateral fissure, lateral ambient fissure piceous between anterior lateral fissure and posterior pronotal collar lateral angle, piceous mark in posterior ambient fissure on midline and posterior to posterior terminus of lateral fissures. Pronotal collar light ground color, lateral margin narrowing anteriorly. Mesonotum ground color, longitudinal fascia along parapsdial suture, fascia along medial submedian sigillae, both fasciae expanding posteriorly reaching to posterior of submedian sigillae, short piceous fascia in middle of lateral sigillae lateral margin, piceous on scutal depression, mark extending across anterior or anterior arm of cruciform elevation to spot on posterior or arm, long silvery pile between anterior arms of cruciform elevation, on lateral and posterior mesonotum, and in wing groove, short pile between anterior and posterior arms of cruciform elevation. Metanotum ground color, short silvery pile on posterior metanotum. Ventral thoracic segments ochraceous medially and laterally separated by castaneous, covered with short silvery pile.
Wings
Fore wings and hind wings hyaline with slight bronzing in the fore wing apical cells, fore wings with eight apical cells, hind wing with six apical cells, left fore wing in one paratype missing multiple veins and only cubitus posterior + anal vein 1 normally shaped. Venation ground color except red costal margin, radius & subcostal vein and radius anterior 1, castaneous spot on wing base, and castaneous anal vein 2 + 3. Costal margin expanding at node. Basal cell about six times longer than broad with ground color infuscation along radius & subcostal vein. Pterostigma present, reddish, extending to radial crossvein. Basal membrane of fore wing grayish mottled with red. Hind wing venation ground color with castaneous spot on base. Basal plaga, anal cell 3 along anal vein 3, anal cell 2 along anal veins 2 and 3, and anal cell 1 along anal vein 2 with gray mottled with red infuscation.
Legs
Legs ground color marked with castaneous. Coxae dark castaneous with triangular ground color mark on anterior and posterior surfaces, trochanters ground color margined with castaneous, intensity of castaneous decreasing in posterior trochanters, femora ground color striped with castaneous, intensity of castaneous decreasing in posterior femora, tibiae ground color with castaneous spot proximally, spot reduced in hind tibiae, and castaneous distal region, tarsi castaneous with ground color middle, castaneous reduced in hind tarsi, pretarsal claws ground color at base with castaneous tips. Fore femora with primary spine longest, angled, secondary spine with broad base, almost upright and as long as primary spine, and small tertiary spine parallel to secondary spine, spines castaneous. Tibial spurs and tibial comb ground color with castaneous tips. Legs radiating long silvery pile, short silvery pile on coxae. Female meracanthus tawny with ground color triangular extension, curving laterad at tip, reaching to posterior opercular margin.
Operculum
Female operculum ochraceous with tawny spot on anterolateral base, lateral base extended, lateral margin short, parallel to long body axis, posterior margin forming approximate right angle to lateral margin, posteromedial corner rounded, medial margin narrow, pointed, not reaching medially to medial meracanthus, reaching posteriorly to anterior of sternite II, covered with sparse, short silvery pile.
Abdomen
Abdominal tergites ground color, tergites 2–8 with darker transverse fascia, most intense dorsally on either side of midline, incomplete dorsally on tergites 2 and 3, narrowed dorsally on tergites 4–8, tawny spot on lateral tergites 3–6, spots darker in some paratypes and continuing to tergite 7, short silvery pile on tergites. Sternites I and II ground color with medial tawny mark, auditory capsule tawny, sternites III–VI tawny with ground color spot on anterolateral surface. Female sternite VII ground color, tawny laterally and along single, deep, V-shaped notch, posterior margin on either side of notch forming obtuse angle in middle. Epipleurites ground color. Sternites and epipleurites with short silvery pile and radiating long silvery pile. Female abdominal segment 9 ground color with tawny fasciae not reaching posterior segment on either side of dorsal midline and anterolaterally, dorsal beak ground color, angled dorsally, covered with short silvery pile, radiating long silvery pile from lateral and ventral regions. Dorsal beak not extending beyond reddish anal styles. Posterior margin of abdominal segment 9 sinuate.
Genitalia
Female gonocoxite IX ground color with piceous medial margin, gonapophysis VIII tawny, gonapophysis IX ground color with castaneous distal end, gonapophysis X ground color. Ovipositor sheath short, extending just beyond dorsal beak. Short silvery pile radiating from ovipositor sheath.
Male is unknown.
Measurements (mm).—N = 5 females, mean (range). Length of body: 15.02 (14.55–15.40); length of fore wing: 20.34 (19.55–21.30); width of fore wing: 7.59 (7.30–7.90); length of head: 2.10 (2.05–2.15); width of head including eyes: 4.69 (4.50–4.80); width of pronotum including suprahumeral plates: 5.80 (5.50–6.00); width of mesonotum: 4.84 (4.65–5.00).
Diagnosis.—The small tawny body marked with piceous and the red costal margin quickly distinguishes this species from Malgachialna noualhieri . The presence of opercula and the truncated head in this new species distinguishes it from similarly sized species of other genera.
Distribution.—The species is only known from the type locality Ambilanivy Forest, Ampasindava, Antsiranana province, on the northern tip of Madagascar.
