Subfamily RHOPALOPHTHALMINAE Hansen, 1910
Remarks. Furnestin (1959) identified as Rhopalophthalmus flagellipes Illig, 1906 one young male sampled in surface waters between Cap Juby and Fuerteventura Island. Unfortunately, this unique specimen is probably lost ( Vilas et al. 2008). Although incompletely described, the few morphological features given by Furnestin (1959) show that this specimen cannot be referred to any of the species known from the western African coast and should be treated as a misidentification (Nouvel 1960, Vilas et al. 2008). Costa (1988) reported Rhopalophthalmus mediterraneus Nouvel, 1960 as component of some fish diets in the Tagus estuary and Alcaraz (1986) as a species in the Catalan sea. Considering the updated information on the geographical distribution of the genus Rhopalophthalmus ( Vilas et al. 2008) , this report may be considered doubtful.
